HOUSTON - Bert Blyleven had his best stuff going, and Cincinnati hitters were chanceless. Houston's right-hander fired a 1-hitter, his 2nd shutout of the season. Blyleven (8-15) struck out 7 and issued 1 BB, throwing 62 of 101 pitches for strikes. 'My catcher called a very good game. I have to give credit to him.' Houston's catcher Bill Freehan stroked 2 hits in 3 AB, doubling once, scoring two runs and collecting 4 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Blyleven. Houston scored 8 runs on 8 hits.
Tuesday 9/20/1972: New York (N)'s Floyd Robinson laces 2000th career hit
NEW YORK (N) - Floyd Robinson got a standing ovation from 48380 fans in New York (N), who witnessed his 2000th career hit. In 13 years of big league action so far, Floyd has compiled a batting average of .290, along with 162 homeruns and 833 RBI. 'It's hard to believe that I did it. I want to thank my family, my friends and my teammates!' His hit in the 1st inning was a double off Mike Corkins.
Monday 9/19/1972: Don Sutton pitches his 8th shutout of the season
SAN FRANCISCO - Don Sutton took the mound and never left. And Chicago (N) hitters couldn't touch him at all. San Francisco's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 8th shutout of the season. He now has 22 career shutouts in 159 games started. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Sutton (21-10) fanned 9 and walked 2, throwing 139 pitches. San Francisco's catcher Dick Dietz finished with 1 hit in 3 AB, homering once. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Sutton. The final score of the game was 2-0.
Monday 9/19/1972: Stottlemyre (NYA) and Drysdale (STL) win P.O.W. award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Mel Stottlemyre, one of New York (A)'s best starting pitchers. Stottlemyre was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.50. Along the way he struck out 5 in 18 innings. He was able to complete both starts of the week. Don Drysdale of St. Louis wins his 14th Player of the Week award for dominating National League's hitters the entire week. Don went 2-0 with an ERA of 1.06, while fanning 16 in 17 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. In 34 starts this year Don struck out 323 batters in 285.2 innings of work. His ERA is 1.95, his record 22-8. Don has pitched 6 shutouts and 16 complete games. He's 6th in the National League in ERA and 3rd in wins!
Saturday 9/17/1972: Cincinnati's McBride out for 6 weeks
CINCINNATI - When it rains, it pours. Cincinnati's ace Ken McBride will not pitch for at least 6 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Atlanta where he left the field in the 6th inning. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Pulled Bicep Muscle. Opposing players hit .253 against Ken this season. While posting an ERA of 5.04 he went 3-3 in 8 starts, fanning 33 and walking 20 hitters.
Saturday 9/17/1972: Koichi Tabuchi out for full season
KANSAS CITY - Kansas City's catcher Koichi Tabuchi suffered a season ending injury he was bowled over in a collision at home plate. Tabuchi laid unconscious on the field for several minutes and had to be carried off the field. He will miss the entire season. Tabuchi was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Broken Wrist. Tabuchi has walked 28 times this year and posts a .301 OBP. While batting .261, 117 for 449, he has driven in 59 runs.
