Saturday 10/1/1972: Chicago (A)'s Watt earns Pitcher of the Month award
Eddie Watt couldn't have pitched much better than he did in September, and the American League thought so as well, naming the right-hander Pitcher of the Month. His record of 6-0 in 7 was among the leagues best this month. In 59.2 innings of work he allowed just 32 hits while striking out 35, compiling an ERA of just 1.51. Eddie also fired a shutout. Opposing players hit .194 against Eddie this season. While posting an ERA of 1.85 he went 25-6 in 39 starts, fanning 228 and walking 54 hitters. Eddie has pitched 5 shutouts and 14 complete games. He's 2nd in the American League in ERA and 2nd in wins! St. Louis' pitcher Mike Corkins is the National League winner of the Pitcher of the Month award in September. He started 7 games in September, going 5-0 and compiling an ERA of 0.99 in 54.2 innings. Mike fanned 47 hitters. Mike got two complete game shutouts as well! Boston's first baseman Steve Garvey had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Batter of the Month. Steve pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .344 with 5 and 27 RBI while slugging .563. Steve has gone 161 for 556 (.290) this season, hitting 23 homeruns and driving in 103 runs. He has scored 59 runs on his own. It's the 1st time that the National League Batter of the Month award goes to San Francisco's third baseman Alex George. Alex pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .385 with 4 and 17 RBI while slugging .587. He has hit 16 homeruns while batting .308 this season. His 171 hits and 94 walks add up to a .412 on-base percentage. He's 4th in the National League in batting!
Monday 9/26/1972: Player of the Week honors go to Beck and Koufax
The American League's best player of the week was Cleveland's Rich Beck, who wins the award for the 4th time in his career. Rich went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00, while fanning 13 in 18 innings of work. He pitched two shutouts! It's the 14th time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Los Angeles (N)'s pitcher Sandy Koufax. Koufax was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00. Along the way he struck out 20 in 17 innings. He hurled a shutout as well. His ERA of 1.88 helped him to a 22-7 record this year. He struck out 340 and walked 53 in 310.2 innings. Sandy has pitched 5 shutouts and 15 complete games. He's 3rd in the National League in ERA and 3rd in wins!
Sunday 9/25/1972: Dave Wickersham quiets New York (A) bats with shutout
NEW YORK (A) - Dave Wickersham took the mound and never left. And New York (A) hitters couldn't touch him at all. Minnesota's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 3rd shutout of the season. He now has 15 career shutouts in 315 games started. Wickersham (13-13) fanned 8 and walked 4, throwing 116 pitches. 'Pitching a great game is always a good thing. And it doesn't get much better than today.' Gates Brown helped Wickersham at the plate, he went 3 for 4, blasting a homerun, scoring two runs with 2 RBI. Minnesota improved its record to 90-65, scoring 3 runs on 12 hits.
Saturday 9/24/1972: Mike Corkins dominates San Diego, gives up just one hit
ST. LOUIS - St. Louis' right-hander Mike Corkins is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. San Diego found out the hard way, getting just one hit. Corkins 5th shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 5th shutouts in his career. Corkins (16-8) struck out 8 and walked 2, throwing 63 of 110 pitches for strikes. 'Today I just felt fine. I had a good feeling while warming up.' The hitting star for St. Louis was second baseman Wayne Causey, he went 3 for 4. St. Louis improved its record to 94-60, scoring 4 runs on 11 hits.
