Friday 10/28/1972: Chicago (A)'s Watt earns Cy Young Award
Eddie Watt was named the American League Cy Young Award winner today. Chicago (A)'s right-hander put up fabulous numbers this year which earned him the highest award a pitcher can receive. This season Watt compiled an ERA of 1.80, going 25-6 in 40 starts. He fanned 230 while giving up 220 hits in 325 innings. He has 14 complete games and 5 shutouts. He's 2nd in the American League in ERA and 2nd in wins! Awards may not be the most important thing for Jack Billingham, but Cincinnati's right-hander smiled as he was named the National League Cy Young Award winner. Opposing players hit .175 against Jack this season. While posting an ERA of 1.53 he went 22-5 in 38 starts, fanning 223 and walking 65 hitters. Jack has pitched one shutout and 2 complete games. He's 1st in the National League in ERA and 6th in wins!
Friday 10/28/1972: Rose Sr. and Clemente earn Most Valuable Player Award honors
Detroit's centerfielder Pete Rose Sr. will never forget this day. A great season convinced the voters that he is the worthy American League Most Valuable Player Award winner. This year Rose Sr. drove in 98 and scored 108 runs while batting .321 with 23 taters. He's 1st in the American League in batting and 5th in RBI! Rose Sr. wins the award for the 4th time in his 9-year career. Los Angeles (N)'s rightfielder Roberto Clemente had a fabulous season as well, no doubt about it. The National League shared this opinion and names the 38 year old the Most Valuable Player Award winner! Clemente has hit for a .352 average this season. He has 74 extra base hits along with 335 total bases, resulting in a .546 slugging percentage. He's 1st in the National League in batting and 3rd in RBI! Clemente wins the award for the 7th time in his 17-year career.

George Foster will never forget his first full season. The American League was convinced that California's centerfielder, 23 years old, should be the Rookie of the Year Award winner of 1972. He has hit 20 taters while batting .260 this season. His 121 hits and 38 walks add up to a .318 on-base percentage. The National League Rookie of the Year Award winner was announced today as well, with St. Louis' pitcher Mike Corkins earning the trophy for putting up the best numbers among rookies in his league. This season Corkins compiled an ERA of 2.36, going 16-9 in 29 starts. He fanned 189 while giving up 161 hits in 240.2 innings. He has 12 complete games and 5 shutouts.
