The American League Player of the Week award goes to Pete Rose Sr., Detroit's starting shortstop. Pete went 15 for 32 (.469), while hitting 3 HR and collecting 12 RBI. Rose Sr. has hit for a .448 average this season. He has 8 extra base hits along with 45 total bases, resulting in a .776 slugging percentage. He's 1st in the American League in batting, 2nd in homeruns and 1st in RBI! Bernie Carbo wins his 2nd Player of the Week award. National League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. In 19 at bats he hit .421 with 4 HR and 11 RBI.
Sunday 4/17/1973: Chris Zachary quiets San Diego bats with shutout
SAN DIEGO - Chris Zachary had some fun again. San Diego hitters did not. Chicago (N)'s right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 8 career shutouts in 123 games started. Zachary (3-0) was overpowering, fanning 11 while walking 3, throwing 117 pitches. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today.' The hitting star for Chicago (N) was second baseman Syd O'Brien, he went 2 for 3, hitting a homerun, scoring twice. Chicago (N) improved its record to 10-4, scoring 7 runs on 11 hits.
Sunday 4/17/1973: Joey Jay fires 2-hitter against Texas
TEXAS - Boston's right-hander Joey Jay is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Texas on just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 29th time he has done it in his career. The bid for a no-hitter was broken up when Joe Pepitone singled with no outs in the 8th inning. 'I was able to keep´em off balance. That certainly helped.' Jay (2-1) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 2. Chico Salmon helped Jay at the plate, he stroked 3 hits in 5 AB, homering once. Boston improved its record to 8-6, scoring 4 runs on 8 hits.
Saturday 4/16/1973: Cincinnati's Murcer out for full season
CINCINNATI - Cincinnati's leftfielder Bobby Murcer suffered a season ending injury when he hurt himself diving for a ball. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. Torn Back Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. His season numbers are: .245 AVG, 13 hits, 2 doubles, no triples and no longballs, along with 5 RBI and 2 runs scored.

HOUSTON - Great days are rare. But not for Cincinnati's right-hander Jack Fisher. Houston found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 24th time he has done it in his career. Fisher (3-0) struck out 5 and walked 2, throwing 54 of 101 pitches for strikes. 'Winning is the most important thing. And I gave my team all the support it needed!' Cincinnati's rightfielder Jim Wynn finished with 2 hits in 4 AB, scoring 2 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Fisher. MONTREAL - Good things can happen when you throw strikes. And Joe Moeller did so today, in a 1-hit shutout against Montreal. 'That was one of the best games of my career. I had my stuff working very well today.' Moeller (1-1) struck out 1 and walked 6, throwing 61 of 117 pitches for strikes. Nate Colbert helped Moeller at the plate, he finished 3 for 5, going deep twice, scoring twice with 5 RBI. The final score of the game was 8-0.

ATLANTA - Atlanta's offense is struggling, and New York (N)'s Tom Seaver didn't help them. The right-hander fired his 1st shutout of the season, a 2-hitter. Seaver (1-0) fanned 8 and walked none, throwing 110 pitches. 'My catcher called a very good game. I have to give credit to him.' New York (N)'s centerfielder Tony Conigliaro finished 1 for 4, stroking a double, and driving in 2 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Seaver. MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee's rightfielder Don Baylor suffered a serious injury when he was struck by a pitch from Chicago (A)'s Grant Jackson. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. Baylor will probaby miss 6-7 weeks. Milwaukee wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Baylor had suffered a Broken Finger.
Monday 4/11/1973: Bonds (CAL) and Brabender (NYM) win P.O.W. award
The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to California's Bobby Bonds this time, as the rightfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Bobby pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .440 with 3 HR and 9 RBI while slugging .920. New York (N)'s pitcher Gene Brabender had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Brabender was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00. Along the way he struck out 16 in 18 innings. He pitched two shutouts!
Sunday 4/10/1973: Boston's Johnson out for 9 weeks
BOSTON - Boston's Cliff Johnson suffered a serious injury Sunday in a game against New York (A). Johnson fell down while running the bases and couldn't get up without help. He will miss probably 9 weeks. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Broken Foot.

KANSAS CITY - Kansas City's ace Harry Parker suffered a severe injury on Sunday and will be out for at least 6 weeks.
