Breaking News
Monday 5/16/1973: McCarver (DET) and May (STL) win P.O.W. award
Detroit's catcher Tim McCarver had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. McCarver helped his team with an average of .455 and 8 RBI in 22 at bats. The National League's best player of the week was St. Louis' Lee May, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. He had an on base percentage of .556 and hit .500, while driving in 5 runs. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 10 game hitting streak right now. Friday 5/13/1973: New York (N)'s Dietz severely injured
NEW YORK (N) - Being hit with a pitch is no fun at all. Especially when you get injured. New York (N)'s first baseman Dick Dietz will miss about 5-6 weeks after being hit by Mudcat Grant in the 6th inning of the game between New York (N) and Chicago (N). Dietz was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Broken Hand. His season features a batting average of .220 (28 hits in 127 AB), 4 doubles, no triples and one bomb. Dietz collected 11 RBI and 19 runs as well.
Tuesday 5/10/1973: Michiyo Arito ropes four hits, completes cycle
CHICAGO (N) - Michiyo Arito is a pretty good hitter, but his 4 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself considering that the hits added up to the cycle, one of the most difficult things to accomplish in baseball. A single in the 4th off Chris Zachary accounted for his 1st hit. A double off Chris Zachary in the 6th inning accounted for his 2nd hit. His 3rd hit, a two-run homerun off Chris Zachary in the 7th inning, cleared the fence in left field. It tied the ballgame at 7. In the 9th inning he unloaded a triple off Al Raffo. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Michiyo did drive in 2 while scoring 2 runs on his own. He is hitting .217 this season, with 1 HR and 11 RBI. He becomes the 35th player in league history collect at least a single, double, triple and a homerun in a single game. Don Mincher was the last player to hit for the cycle, doing it 10/9/1972.
Tuesday 5/10/1973: Gorman Thomas out for 5 weeks
SAN DIEGO - San Diego's players were scared when they had to watch Gorman Thomas suffer a serious injury when he dove for a ball in the game against New York (N). He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. Thomas will probaby miss 5 weeks. Spasms Back was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. This year Thomas drove in 12 and scored 16 runs while batting .273 with 4 longballs.
