Wednesday 6/1/1973: Kansas City's Renko earns Pitcher of the Month award Steve Renko pitched like a legend in May, and the American League named him Pitcher of the Month for his extraordinary performance. He had an ERA of just 1.96 in 41.1 innings of work in which he struck out 17 hitters. His record in May is 5-0. Steve pitched a shutout as well. In 5 starts this year Steve struck out 23 batters in 65.1 innings of work. His ERA is 1.93, his record 6-1. Steve has pitched one shutout and 2 complete games. He's 4th in the American League in ERA and 7th in wins! Winner of this months National League Pitcher of the Month award is San Diego's Mike Joyce. He started 5 games in May, going 4-0 and compiling an ERA of 1.07 in 33.2 innings. Mike fanned 25 hitters. In 11 starts this year Mike struck out 56 batters in 76.1 innings of work. His ERA is 1.77, his record 5-1. Wednesday 6/1/1973: Batter of the Month award winners announced Chicago (A)'s rightfielder Art Shamsky had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Batter of the Month. Art pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .393 with 6 and 26 RBI while slugging .690. Art has gone 52 for 175 (.297) this season, hitting 9 longballs and driving in 38 runs. He has scored 21 runs on his own. Nate Colbert of Philadelphia wins his 1st Batter of the Month award for putting up the best numbers in the National League. Colbert helped his team with an average of .337 and 26 RBI in 98 at bats. His season numbers are: .307 AVG, 63 hits, 10 doubles, 4 triples and 13 homeruns, along with 48 RBI and 33 runs scored. He's 6th in the National League in batting, 2nd in homeruns and 1st in RBI! Monday 5/30/1973: Jim McGlothlin shuts out Cleveland on 2 hits CLEVELAND - Jim McGlothlin took the mound and never left. And Cleveland hitters couldn't touch him at all. California's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 8 career shutouts in 103 games started. McGlothlin (7-4) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking 2, throwing 122 pitches. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Ken McMullen provided California with the offense McGlothlin needed as he got 2 hits in 4 AB. California improved its record to 28-23, scoring 1 run on 6 hits. Monday 5/30/1973: Chicago (A)'s Katsuo Osugi has great day, hits three longballs BALTIMORE - Hitting a homerun is fine, but hitting three of them in one game is something special. Chicago (A)'s first baseman Katsuo Osugi accomplished that feat in a 14-5 win over Baltimore. His 1st shot, a solo homerun off Jim Palmer in the 2nd inning, cleared the fence in left field. A 429 foot drive to right-center marked his 2nd bomb, a two-run homerun off Jim Palmer in the 3rd inning. His 3rd blast, a solo homerun off Jim Palmer in the 5th inning, landed an estimated 318 feet from home plate. Katsuo went 4 for 4, with FOUR runs scored and collecting 4 RBI. Monday 5/30/1973: Player of the Week honors go to Bando and Colbert Sal Bando from Oakland wins his 2nd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. He hit .522 with 8 RBI and slugged .913 in 23 at bats. Nate Colbert wins his 2nd Player of the Week award. National League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Colbert helped his team with an average of .484 and 10 RBI in 31 at bats. Wednesday 5/25/1973: Ron Taylor turns in great performance against Texas MINNESOTA - Ron Taylor took the mound and never left. And Texas hitters couldn't touch him at all. Minnesota's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 25 career shutouts in 332 games started. Taylor (5-3) struck out none and issued 5 BB, throwing 59 of 106 pitches for strikes. 'Pitching a great game is always a good thing. And it doesn't get much better than today.' Minnesota's second baseman Rod Carew finished 2 for 4, hitting a homerun, and driving in 2 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Taylor. Minnesota improved its record to 29-17, scoring 4 runs on 6 hits. Monday 5/23/1973: Davey Johnson on fire, crushes three MINNESOTA - Davey Johnson was in a groove, and the results spoke for themselves. He powered Minnesota to a 5-4 win over Texas by homering three times. His 1st blast, a solo homerun off Dock Ellis in the 2nd inning, landed an estimated 437 feet from home plate. Number 2 in the 4th inning, a shot estimated at 414 feet, cleared the wall in left field. His 3rd shot, off Dock Ellis in the 6th inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in center field. Davey finished 3 for 4, scoring three times and driving in 3 runs. Monday 5/23/1973: Player of the Week honors go to Stottlemyre and Smith It's the 5th time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to New York (A)'s pitcher Mel Stottlemyre. Mel went 2-0 with an ERA of 1.06, while fanning 10 in 17 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. It's the 2nd time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Cincinnati's leftfielder Reggie Smith. Reggie pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .455 with 1 HR and 4 RBI while slugging .682. Friday 5/20/1973: Mike Hargrove stars with cycle against Detroit DETROIT - Mike Hargrove hits 'em where they ain't. Detroit certainly agrees as Cleveland's first baseman unloaded four hits and hitting for the cycle. A single in the 1st off Roger Nelson accounted for his 1st hit. His 2nd hit was a triple off Roger Nelson in the 3rd inning. A 367 foot drive to left-center marked his 3rd hit, a solo homerun off Roger Nelson in the 5th inning. His 4th hit was a two-run double off Roger Nelson in the 7th inning. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Mike scored one run, and he collected 4 RBI as well! He is hitting .230 this season, with 5 HR and 20 RBI. 36 players in league history have so far hit for the cycle, including Mike. Michiyo Arito was the last player to hit for the cycle, doing it 5/10/1973. Thursday 5/19/1973: Eddie Watt dominates Boston, gives up just one hit BOSTON - Eddie Watt had some fun again. Boston hitters did not. Chicago (A)'s right-hander gave up just one hit in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 25 career shutouts in 195 games started. With one out in the 8th inning Mike Solomko singled to break up the no-hitter. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Watt (2-4) struck out 3 and walked none, throwing 66 of 101 pitches for strikes. The hitting star for Chicago (A) was centerfielder Willie Montanez, he went 1 for 4, homering once. Chicago (A) scored 2 runs on 5 hits.
