Monday 7/4/1973: Harimoto and Jones win Player of the Week award It's the 6th time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Baltimore's rightfielder Isao Harimoto. He had an on base percentage of .593 and hit .542, while driving in 8 runs. Atlanta's third baseman Mack Jones had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Mack went 9 for 16 (.563), while hitting 3 HR and collecting 6 RBI. Jones has hit 16 bombs this year while batting .306. He adds 13 doubles, along with 49 runs scored. He's 5th in the National League in batting, 2nd in homeruns and 2nd in RBI! Friday 7/1/1973: Upshaw and Billingham receive Pitcher of the Month award The best month of June in the American League certainly had New York (A)'s right-hander Cecil Upshaw, earning him the Pitcher of the Month award. He went 6-0 in June and finished the month with an ERA of 1.31. He struck out 9 in 61.2 innings. Cecil also fired a shutout. Cecil has a record of 12-4 this season, with an ERA of 1.90. In 151.1 Innings he was able to strike out 27 batters. He has 7 complete games and one shutout. He's 2nd in the American League in ERA and 3rd in wins! Jack Billingham pitched like a legend in June, and the National League named him Pitcher of the Month for his extraordinary performance. He had an ERA of just 0.80 in 45 innings of work in which he struck out 32 hitters. His record in June is 5-0. Jack also fired a shutout. Opposing players hit .173 against Jack this season. While posting an ERA of 1.45 he went 6-4 in 14 starts, fanning 84 and walking 28 hitters. Jack has pitched one shutout and one complete game. Friday 7/1/1973: Red hot Jackson and Torre win Batter of the Month award The American League Batter of the Month award goes to Reggie Jackson, New York (A)'s starting rightfielder. He had an on base percentage of .355 and hit .297, while driving in 24 runs. His season numbers are: .310 AVG, 94 hits, 7 doubles, 10 triples and 21 taters, along with 62 RBI and 54 runs scored. He's 5th in the American League in batting, 1st in homeruns and 2nd in RBI! Joe Torre of New York (N) wins his 2nd Batter of the Month award for putting up the best numbers in the National League. Joe went 44 for 105 (.419), while hitting 3 HR and collecting 25 RBI. This year Torre drove in 42 and scored 51 runs while batting .321 with 6 longballs. He's 2nd in the National League in batting! Thursday 6/30/1973: Detroit's Coggins severely injured DETROIT - Detroit's shortstop Frank Coggins suffered a serious injury when he was struck by a pitch from Texas' Steve Jones. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. Coggins will probaby miss 6 weeks. Detroit wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Coggins had suffered a Fractured Cheekbone. Coggins has hit 8 homeruns this year while batting .259. He adds 6 doubles, along with 31 runs scored. Monday 6/27/1973: Bill Monbouquette blanks Houston with a 1-hitter HOUSTON - Great days are rare. But not for New York (N)'s right-hander Bill Monbouquette. Houston found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just one hit. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 32nd time he has done it in his career. With no outs in the 9th inning Bob Boone singled to break up the no-hitter. 'I was hitting my spots. Now I'll start concentrating on my next start, and hopefully it will work again.' Monbouquette (7-5) fanned 6 and walked none, throwing 101 pitches. Joe Torre provided New York (N) with the offense Monbouquette needed as he finished 2 for 5, and driving in 3 runs. New York (N) scored 5 runs on 14 hits. Monday 6/27/1973: Montreal's Lamb wins Player of the Week award The American League's best player of the week was Detroit's Jackie Warner, who wins the award for the 2nd time in his career. In 22 at bats he hit .500 with 3 HR and 8 RBI. The National League Player of the Week award goes to Ray Lamb, one of Montreal's best starting pitchers. Ray went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00, while fanning 8 in 18 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. His ERA of 4.82 helped him to a 9-3 record this year. He struck out 43 and walked 56 in 115.2 innings. He has 3 complete games and one shutout. He's 5th in the National League in wins! Saturday 6/25/1973: New York (A)'s Jaster severely injured NEW YORK (A) - New York (A) is without its ace Larry Jaster for at least 6 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Carmen Fanzone in a game against Kansas City. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Bone Chips Elbow. His ERA of 2.85 helped him to a 11-4 record this year. He struck out 81 and walked 9 in 142.1 innings. He has 8 complete games and 2 shutouts. He's 3rd in the American League in wins!
