Monday 7/11/1973: Tony Conigliaro out for full season
NEW YORK (N) - New York (N)'s centerfielder Tony Conigliaro will miss the rest of the season. He injured himself running the bases in the game between New York (N) and Los Angeles (N). The injury didn't seem to be serious the moment it happened. But suddenly Conigliaro collapsed in pain and had to be carried off the field. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Broken Ankle which will require surgery. This year Conigliaro drove in 36 and scored 31 runs while batting .283 with 6 bombs.
Saturday 7/9/1973: Detroit's Perry out for 5 weeks
DETROIT - Detroit is without its right-hander Jim Perry for at least 5 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Reggie Jackson in a game against New York (A). His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Perry was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Ruptured Elbow Ligament. In 20 starts this year Jim struck out 57 batters in 153.1 innings of work. His ERA is 2.88, his record 11-4. He has 7 complete games and 2 shutouts. He's 4th in the American League in wins!
Friday 7/8/1973: Ralph Terry (HOU) will miss full season
HOUSTON - Houston's ace Ralph Terry experienced probably the worst case scenario for a pitcher, a season ending injury. After pitching in the 9th inning of the game against Atlanta, Terry complained about serious pain in his throwing arm. He had to leave the game. After being taken to a local hospital, Terry was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Bone Chips Shoulder. Opposing players hit .179 against Ralph this season. While posting an ERA of 2.76 he went 8-4 in 18 starts, fanning 104 and walking 27 hitters. He has 3 complete games and 2 shutouts.
