CALIFORNIA - California's rightfielder Bobby Bonds flexed his muscles and displayed his tremendous power, homering three times in a 9-2 win over Kansas City. A pitch from Dennis Ribant in the 3rd inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 386 feet from home plate in left field. His 2nd shot, off Dennis Ribant in the 7th inning, was a two-run homerun and cleared the fence in center field. A 376 foot drive to left field marked his 3rd bomb, a three-run homerun off Horacio Pina in the 8th inning. Overall he finished with 4 hits in 5 AB, scoring three times with 6 RBI. In 3789 career at bats, he has hit 167 homeruns and collected 551 RBI. California improved its record to 61-35, scoring 9 runs on 12 hits.
Thursday 7/21/1973: Lew Krausse Jr. turns in great performance against Oakland
TEXAS - Texas' right-hander Lew Krausse Jr. is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Oakland on just 2 hits. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 13th time he has done it in his career. 'Today I just felt fine. I had a good feeling while warming up.' Krausse Jr. (9-10) struck out 5 and issued 1 BB, throwing 67 of 118 pitches for strikes. Bob Robertson provided Texas with the offense Krausse Jr. needed as he collected 1 hit in 2 trips to the plate, hitting a homerun, with 2 RBI. Texas improved its record to 36-58, scoring 3 runs on 8 hits.
Wednesday 7/20/1973: Stan Bahnsen turns in great performance against Los Angeles (N)
ATLANTA - Atlanta's right-hander Stan Bahnsen is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Los Angeles (N) on just one hit. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 8th time he has done it in his career. 'I had my stuff going. Everything I tried worked. What a day!' Bahnsen (6-7) struck out 4 and issued 4 BB, throwing 65 of 114 pitches for strikes. Mack Jones provided Atlanta with the offense Bahnsen needed as he collected 3 hits in 4 trips to the plate, hitting a homerun, doubling twice, scoring two runs. The final score of the game was 5-0.
Wednesday 7/20/1973: Montreal's Michiyo Arito hits for the cycle
SAN DIEGO - Michiyo Arito is a pretty good hitter, but his 4 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself considering that the hits added up to the cycle, one of the most difficult things to accomplish in baseball. A RBI double off Jim Kaat in the 1st inning accounted for his 1st hit. A pitch from Jim Kaat in the 4th inning left his bat for a triple. A single in the 5th off Jim Kaat accounted for his 3rd hit. Number 4 in the 8th inning, a shot estimated at 448 feet, cleared the wall in center field. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Michiyo did drive in 2 while scoring 2 runs on his own. He is hitting .242 this season, with 10 HR and 37 RBI. He becomes the 37th player in league history collect at least a single, double, triple and a homerun in a single game. Mike Hargrove was the last player to hit for the cycle, doing it 5/20/1973.
Wednesday 7/20/1973: Nolan Ryan out for 5 weeks
CALIFORNIA - When it rains, it pours. California's right-hander Nolan Ryan will not pitch for at least 5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Chicago (A) where he left the field in the 1st inning. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Inflamed Rotator Cuff Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. Nolan has a record of 12-4 this season, with an ERA of 3.50. In 157 Innings he was able to strike out 134 batters. Nolan has pitched 3 shutouts and 6 complete games. He's 4th in the American League in wins!
Monday 7/18/1973: New York (N)'s Perry wins Player of the Week award
Chicago (A)'s pitcher Eddie Watt had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Watt was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00. Along the way he struck out 9 in 18 innings. He hurled a shutout as well. Eddie has a record of 10-7 this season, with an ERA of 1.82. In 178.1 Innings he was able to strike out 96 batters. Eddie has pitched 4 shutouts and 12 complete games. The National League's best player of the week was New York (N)'s Gaylord Perry, who wins the award for the 3rd time in his career. Gaylord went 2-0 with an ERA of 1.06, while fanning 8 in 17 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well.

CHICAGO (A) - Lew Krausse Jr. had some fun again. Chicago (A) hitters did not. Texas' right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 12 career shutouts in 246 games started. 'I had my stuff going. Everything I tried worked. What a day!' Krausse Jr. (8-10) struck out 4 and issued 3 BB, throwing 62 of 106 pitches for strikes. Texas' second baseman Bob Schroder stroked 3 hits in 5 AB, scoring twice. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Krausse Jr.. Texas improved its record to 34-55, scoring 6 runs on 6 hits.
