Wednesday 8/3/1973: Mike Corkins fires 1-hitter against Montreal
MONTREAL - Great days are rare. But not for St. Louis' right-hander Mike Corkins. Montreal found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just one hit. It's his 3rd shutout this season, and the 8th time he has done it in his career. Corkins (12-6) fanned 6 and walked none, throwing 97 pitches. 'I didn't feel that I had good stuff while warming up. But it got better the more I threw the ball. I guess I was lucky.' The hitting star for St. Louis was catcher Gene Tenace, he stroked 2 hits in 3 AB, scoring 2 runs and collecting 2 RBI. St. Louis improved its record to 62-44, scoring 8 runs on 13 hits.
Monday 8/1/1973: San Diego's Cedeno wins Player of the Week award
Minnesota's rightfielder Ken Berry had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. He had an on base percentage of .450 and hit .450, while driving in 6 runs. Ken is hitting .248 this year, with 78 hits in 315 at bats. He has driven in 37 runs, slugging .394. The National League's best player of the week was San Diego's Cesar Cedeno, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. He hit .538 with 3 RBI and slugged .769 in 26 at bats. He has hit 7 bombs while batting .253 this season. His 96 hits and 15 walks add up to a .301 on-base percentage.
Monday 8/1/1973: Watt and Brewer receive Pitcher of the Month award
Eddie Watt couldn't have pitched much better than he did in July, and the American League thought so as well, naming the right-hander Pitcher of the Month. He started 7 games in July, going 5-0 and compiling an ERA of 1.48 in 60.2 innings. Eddie fanned 36 hitters. Eddie pitched a shutout as well. In 24 starts this year Eddie struck out 111 batters in 203 innings of work. His ERA is 1.91, his record 11-7. He has 12 complete games and 4 shutouts. He's 2nd in the American League in ERA and 8th in wins! Los Angeles (N)'s pitcher Jim Brewer is the National League winner of the Pitcher of the Month award in July. He struck out 30 hitters in his 4 starts, putting together a record of 2-0 while pitching 30 innings. His ERA in July was 0.30. His ERA of 1.75 helped him to a 13-3 record this year. He's 4th in the American League in batting, 1st in homeruns and 3rd in RBI! It's the 1st time that the National League Batter of the Month award goes to Cincinnati's leftfielder Reggie Smith. NEW YORK (N) - Atlanta's right-hander Stan Bahnsen is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking New York (N) on just 2 hits. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 9th time he has done it in his career. Bahnsen (7-8) fanned 1 and walked 1, throwing 117 pitches. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today.' The hitting star for Atlanta was leftfielder Bud Zipfel, he finished 2 for 4, hitting a homerun. Atlanta scored 3 runs on 6 hits.
