Dan Schneider of Milwaukee wins his 1st Player of the Week award for dominating American League's hitters the entire week. Dan went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00, while fanning 9 in 16.2 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. In 24 starts this year Dan struck out 70 batters in 176 innings of work. His ERA is 2.51, his record 10-8. He has 6 complete games and 3 shutouts. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to St. Louis' Dean Chance this time, as the pitcher displayed the best pitching perfomance in his league. Dean went 2-0 with an ERA of 1.59, while fanning 11 in 17 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well.
Sunday 8/14/1973: Chicago (N) has no chance in a 2-hitter by Dean Chance
ST. LOUIS - St. Louis' right-hander Dean Chance is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Chicago (N) found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Chance 2nd shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 13th shutouts in his career. Chance (9-5) struck out 5 and walked 2, throwing 71 of 117 pitches for strikes. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today.' Lee May provided St. Louis with the offense Chance needed as he finished 2 for 4, doubling once, scoring 2 runs. The final score of the game was 3-0.
Saturday 8/13/1973: John Strohmayer quiets Texas bats with shutout
TEXAS - Milwaukee's right-hander John Strohmayer will never forget this day. The 26-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 2-hitter, against Texas on Saturday. Strohmayer (6-8) fanned 1 and walked 2, throwing 104 pitches. 'I had a good grip on the ball today and I was able to put it where I wanted. That kept them out of balance.' Don Baylor provided Milwaukee with the offense Strohmayer needed as he stroked 3 hits in 5 AB, hitting a double, scoring two runs and collecting 2 RBI. Milwaukee scored 12 runs on 15 hits.

CHICAGO (N) - Chicago (N)'s right-hander Mudcat Grant already had some highlights in his career, and today he added a historic one as he picked up his 300th career win. Grant went 7.2 innings. He allowed 0 earned runs , giving up 4 hits while striking out 2 and walking 0 earned runs. He has enmassed 3879 K's in 4552 career innings so far, and posts a 2.74 lifetime ERA. He has won 20 games 7 times in his career, setting a career high with 27 wins in 1968. 'Good things happen when you throw strikes. I'm happy I could do it for most of my career.' The Hall of Fame is already waiting for this great player.

Larry Bearnarth of Detroit wins his 4th Player of the Week award for dominating American League's hitters the entire week. Bearnarth was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00. Along the way he struck out 7 in 17 innings. He hurled a shutout as well. This season Bearnarth compiled an ERA of 2.17, going 16-6 in 27 starts. He fanned 101 while giving up 170 hits in 232.2 innings. Larry has pitched 3 shutouts and 15 complete games. He's 4th in the American League in ERA and 2nd in wins! The National League's best player of the week was St. Louis' Mike Corkins, who wins the award for the 2nd time in his career.
