Thursday 9/1/1973: Detroit's Bearnarth earns Pitcher of the Month award
Detroit's Larry Bearnarth had a terrific August, and it earned him the American League Pitcher of the month award. He struck out 23 hitters in his 6 starts, putting together a record of 4-0 while pitching 23 innings. His ERA in August was 1.24. Larry fired two shutouts! Larry has a record of 18-6 this season, with an ERA of 2.13. In 266.2 Innings he was able to strike out 117 batters. He has 17 complete games and 4 shutouts. He's 3rd in the American League in ERA and 3rd in wins! St. Louis' Don Drysdale had a terrific August, and it earned him the National League Pitcher of the month award. He had an ERA of just 1.21 in 59.2 innings of work in which he struck out 59 hitters. His record in August is 3-1. Don got two complete game shutouts as well! His ERA of 1.91 helped him to a 12-8 record this year. He struck out 252 and walked 33 in 240.1 innings. Don has pitched 4 shutouts and 15 complete games.
Thursday 9/1/1973: Red hot Rose Sr. and Torre win Batter of the Month award
Detroit's shortstop Pete Rose Sr. had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Batter of the Month. Pete was on fire, hitting .390 with 8 homeruns and 28 RBI. Rose Sr. has walked 79 times this year and posts a .436 OBP. While batting .344, 166 for 483, he has driven in 110 runs. He's 1st in the American League in batting, 2nd in homeruns and 1st in RBI! The Batter of the Month award in the National League goes to New York (N)'s Joe Torre this time, as the catcher displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. In 99 at bats he hit .414 with 5 HR and 25 RBI. Torre has hit 12 bombs this year while batting .333. He adds 20 doubles, along with 73 runs scored. He's 1st in the National League in batting and 6th in RBI!
Tuesday 8/30/1973: Bob Priddy shuts out Kansas City on 2 hits
KANSAS CITY - Good things can happen when you throw strikes. And Bob Priddy did so today, in a 2-hit shutout against Kansas City. Priddy (7-11) fanned 6 and walked 2, throwing 119 pitches. 'I was able to keep´em off balance. That certainly helped.' Buddy Bell helped Priddy at the plate, he finished 2 for 3, and driving in 2 runs. Milwaukee scored 4 runs on 11 hits.
Monday 8/29/1973: New York (N)'s Foy severely injured
NEW YORK (N) - New York (N)'s second baseman Joe Foy suffered a season ending injury when he hurt himself firing a ball to first base. He collapsed in pain after the throw and was helped off the field. Bone Chips Shoulder was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. This year Foy drove in 38 and scored 81 runs while batting .226 with 9 homeruns.
Monday 8/29/1973: Watt and Drysdale win Player of the Week award
It's the 7th time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Boston's pitcher Eddie Watt. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 1.00 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well. It's the 15th time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to St. Louis' pitcher Don Drysdale. Don went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.50, while fanning 17 in 18 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well.
Saturday 8/27/1973: Tommie Reynolds out for 6-7 weeks
SAN DIEGO - San Diego's rightfielder Tommie Reynolds will miss at least 6-7 weeks after he got hurt seriously while running hard toward second base. He began limping and then fell down, causing a scary moment for his teammates. He had to be carried off the field. After being taken to a local hospital, Reynolds was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Fractured Knee. This year Reynolds drove in 63 and scored 73 runs while batting .277 with 11 longballs.
Friday 8/26/1973: Chicago (A) has no chance in a 2-hitter by Roger Nelson
DETROIT - Roger Nelson had some fun again. Chicago (A) hitters did not. Detroit's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 9 career shutouts in 159 games started. 'I really like to play baseball, and I love the way I was able to play it today.' Nelson (10-10) struck out 6 and issued 1 BB, throwing 68 of 115 pitches for strikes. Frank Coggins provided Detroit with the offense Nelson needed as he got 1 hit in 1 AB. Detroit scored 2 runs on 9 hits.
Tuesday 8/23/1973: Cleon Jones out for 4-5 weeks
ST. LOUIS - St. Louis' leftfielder Cleon Jones will miss about 4-5 weeks after he hurt himself badly in the 13th inning of the game between St. Louis and New York (N). He dove for a drive off the bat of Bob W. Johnson, and immediately signaled that he's not OK after hitting the ground. Jones was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Fractured Hand. Jones has hit 15 homeruns this year while batting .247. He adds 14 doubles, along with 63 runs scored.

LOS ANGELES (N) - Great days are rare. But not for Los Angeles (N)'s left-hander Jack Dilauro. Atlanta found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just one hit. It's his 6th shutout this season, and the 22nd time he has done it in his career. Dilauro (15-5) struck out 5 and issued 2 BB, throwing 68 of 105 pitches for strikes. 'Giving my team a chance to win is the most important thing for me. I was able to do it today.' Hideji Kato provided Los Angeles (N) with the offense Dilauro needed as he finished with 2 hits in 5 AB, homering once, scoring 2 runs with 3 RBI. Los Angeles (N) scored 8 runs on 11 hits.
