Saturday 10/1/1973: Nelson (DET) and Drysdale (STL) win monthly pitcher award
Winner of this months American League Pitcher of the Month award is Detroit's Roger Nelson. He went 4-1 in September and finished the month with an ERA of 0.90. He struck out 18 in 40 innings. Roger also fired a shutout. Opposing players hit .224 against Roger this season. While posting an ERA of 3.06 he went 15-11 in 30 starts, fanning 114 and walking 70 hitters. He has 9 complete games and 3 shutouts. Don Drysdale pitched like a legend in September, and the National League named him Pitcher of the Month for his extraordinary performance. His record of 6-1 in 7 was among the leagues best this month. In 59.2 innings of work he allowed just 25 hits while striking out 60, compiling an ERA of just 0.45. Saturday 10/1/1973: Red hot Foster and Darwin win Batter of the Month award
The Batter of the Month award in the American League goes to California's George Foster this time, as the centerfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. He hit .327 with 20 RBI and slugged .735 in 98 at bats. While compiling an on base percentage of .305, George hit .267 and slugged .476. He has collected 84 runs batted in this year. The Batter of the Month award in the National League goes to Atlanta's Bobby Darwin this time, as the rightfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Bobby went 32 for 87 (.368), while hitting 5 HR and collecting 19 RBI. Darwin has hit for a .251 average this season. He has 34 extra base hits along with 189 total bases, resulting in a .401 slugging percentage.
Friday 9/30/1973: Tom Hall quiets Baltimore bats with shutout
CALIFORNIA - California's southpaw Tom Hall is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Baltimore on just 2 hits. It's his 4th shutout this season, and the 18th time he has done it in his career. Hall (23-5) struck out 2 and issued 2 BB, throwing 50 of 82 pitches for strikes. 'Well, the ball went where I wanted it. I was able to hit the corners with all of my pitches.' California's centerfielder George Foster stroked 3 hits in 4 AB, blasting a homerun, scoring 2 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Hall. California scored 7 runs on 15 hits.
Tuesday 9/27/1973: Chicago (N) has no chance in a NO-HITTER by Don Drysdale
ST. LOUIS - Age doesn't matter. At least St. Louis' right-hander Don Drysdale shares this opinion. The 37 year old pitched a no-hitter against Chicago (N), showing the great stuff that made him famous for years. Drysdale (18-9) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 9. 'I was able to keep´em off balance. That certainly helped. What a day!' St. Louis' first baseman Jose Tartabull finished 1 for 3, hitting a homerun. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Drysdale. St. Louis improved its record to 98-59, scoring 1 run on 5 hits.
Monday 9/26/1973: Eddie Watt dominates Kansas City, gives up just 2 hits
KANSAS CITY - Boston's right-hander Eddie Watt is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Kansas City on just 2 hits. Monday 9/26/1973: Player of the Week honors go to Tolan and Thomas
Bobby Tolan wins his 2nd Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. He had an on base percentage of .613 and hit .577, while driving in 4 runs. Gorman Thomas wins his 1st Player of the Week award. National League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Gorman was on fire, hitting .407 with 4 HR and 9 RBI. He has hit 13 taters while batting .266 this season. His 141 hits and 66 walks add up to a .347 on-base percentage.
Sunday 9/25/1973: Jim Bethke shuts out Los Angeles (N) on 2 hits
PHILADELPHIA - Great days are rare. But not for Philadelphia's right-hander Jim Bethke. Los Angeles (N) found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 3rd shutout this season, and the 4th time he has done it in his career. The bid for a no-hitter was broken up when Lee Thomas singled with no outs in the 5th inning. Bethke (18-6) fanned 5 and walked 2, throwing 101 pitches. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today.' The hitting star for Philadelphia was rightfielder Nate Colbert, he got 3 hits in 4 AB, homering once, stroking a double, with 2 RBI. The final score of the game was 2-0.
Sunday 9/25/1973: Terry Hughes clubs six hits in a game
DETROIT - Terry Hughes is among the best pure hitters in the game, but his 6 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself. A pitch from Ron Cook in the 4th inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 394 feet from home plate in center field. In the 7th inning he unloaded a two-run homerun off Cy Acosta. He collected singles in the 1st , in the 2nd (one RBI) , in the 5th inning (two RBIs) and in the 8th (one RBI). Terry did drive in 7 while scoring 4 runs on his own. This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 130 hits in 427 at bats, resulting in a .304 batting average. Detroit improved its record to 100-56, scoring 11 runs on 17 hits.
