Saturday 10/29/1973: Hall and Joyce receive Cy Young Award
Tom Hall was named the American League Cy Young Award winner today. California's lefty put up fabulous numbers this year which earned him the highest award a pitcher can receive. In 33 starts this year Tom struck out 150 batters in 275.2 innings of work. His ERA is 2.19, his record 23-5. He has 14 complete games and 4 shutouts. He's 2nd in the American League in ERA and 1st in wins! All the hard work finally paid off for San Diego's Mike Joyce as well. The right-hander was named the Cy Young Award winner in the National League today. Mike has a record of 23-5 this season, with an ERA of 2.02. In 285.2 Innings he was able to strike out 220 batters. He has 4 complete games and 3 shutouts. He's 4th in the National League in ERA and 1st in wins!
Saturday 10/29/1973: Rose Sr. (DET) and Jones (ATL) win Most Valuable Player Award
A season for the ages earned Detroit's shortstop Pete Rose Sr. the American League Most Valuable Player Award this year. His season numbers are: .349 AVG, 203 hits, 17 doubles, 11 triples and 30 longballs, along with 123 RBI and 120 runs scored. He's 1st in the American League in batting, 4th in homeruns and 1st in RBI! Rose Sr. wins the award for the 5th time in his 10-year career. Atlanta's third baseman Mack Jones had a fabulous season as well, no doubt about it. The National League shared this opinion and names the 34 year old the Most Valuable Player Award winner! This year Jones drove in 103 and scored 95 runs while batting .306 with 34 homeruns. He's 4th in the National League in batting, 1st in homeruns and 2nd in RBI!

Carlos May was named the American League Rookie of the Year Award winner today. Detroit's leftfielder put up pretty good numbers for a rookie this year. This 25 year old kid will probably have a long and successful career! May has walked 51 times this year and posts a .367 OBP. While batting .296, 144 for 487, he has driven in 80 runs. He's 10th in the American League in batting! Getting an award is a nice way to start a career. San Diego's Bill Madlock smiled as he was named the National League Rookie of the Year Award winner. Bill is hitting .318 this year, with 200 hits in 629 at bats. He has driven in 75 runs, slugging .447. He's 2nd in the National League in batting!
