how many times are we gonna rinse and repeat cincy handing a stud hitter to Pittsburgh? Frank Robinson, now this? Neither of those pitchers is even that great?

a career 4.8 era and a 5.5+ ERA pitcher for a franchise hitter? this is absolutely unfair.

Because Thornton being in AAA for 6 years means he'll be a stud?

Not to mention you're talking pitching numbers off of a team that sucked.

No his talents mean he'll be a stud. I'm so glad talents always work out perfectly all the time in this league. Brock being brilliant in hits and walks meant he consistently hit 330 or better with a 400+ OBP, didn't it?

Lets see....not that I need to explain but exactly where would Thornton play on my team? My 1b Briggs is 29 and my OF is set with Agee, Smith and Murcer.
My staff is aging (Niekro-34, Washburn-35, Fisher-34) and I let Thorpe walk because of age.
Forsch and Reuschel are both young and cheap. I can not afford to go out and sign players. I am tapped out.
As far as Thornton goes......his ratings aren't where they need to be. He has spent 6 years in AAA. I cant remember his exact ratings but Stargell is comparable to Thornton. Had good ratings and sucked because he never developed. I felt getting these pitchers will help short term as I compete for a title and long term as I start losing guys because of age.

I see this trade as fair. Jeff got 2 mid rotation arms for a young 1B, which is a pretty talent rich position. I have ZERO idea what you are bitching about Break. Often it takes young pitchers a few years to start producing up to their ratings so their past success really doesn't mean much to me.

those aren't mid rotation pitchers though they're barely back end guys. I've got like 5 guys like them on my team and I wouldn't start them.

not to mention by the time Thornton would be ready Callison would be ending his usefulness, so moving Briggs to the OF would be possible by then.

7 run pitchers suck in this league because of the crazy ratings, so it's a good trade for Pit.
But at the same time no guarantees the other way that Thornton is any good either, so it's not too bad.

My OF consist of Murcer/Agee/Smith? If we are playing softball I have a spot for him I guess. Callison is a utility player for me. Again Thornton I just do not have faith in that he will develop. That is why I traded him

I feel for Jeff because when I was with the Pirates I had a similar hitter in bob Allison who was a 3rd overall pick with great ratings that never ended up fully developing long after stool took over. That being said, G/B/G pitchers are far from aces in this league. I understand why Jeff did this move to acquire pitching depth but I would've asked for a Jim Hughes or an Ernie Mcanally to start instead of just getting back end starters.

It's a decent trade overall. I just think Jeff could've gotten Mcanally instead if he had maybe asked for him. Obviously I have no clue what the dialogue between them consisted of but my hunch is stool offered the trade we see here and Jeff didn't counter with Mcanally or even Hughes.

I can personally tell you McAnally isn't coming cheap.

Yeah but he was supposed to be one of the next big superstars and only became a utility backup
