It's the 1st time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Minnesota's second baseman Matty Alou. Alou helped his team with an average of .429 and 9 RBI in 28 at bats. It's the 1st time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Chicago (N)'s second baseman Syd O'Brien. Syd was on fire, hitting .440 with 2 HR and 11 RBI. Syd has gone 14 for 49 (.286) this season, hitting 2 homeruns and driving in 12 runs. He has scored 10 runs on his own.
Sunday 4/17/1974: John Strohmayer pitches 1-hit shutout against Boston
BOSTON - Good things can happen when you throw strikes. And John Strohmayer did so today, in a 1-hit shutout against Boston. Strohmayer (2-1) struck out 3 and issued 2 BB, throwing 54 of 85 pitches for strikes. 'I hit the corners with all of my pitches. That helped a lot!' Milwaukee's second baseman Roberto Mendez went 3 for 4, doubling once. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Strohmayer. Milwaukee scored 2 runs on 7 hits.
Saturday 4/16/1974: Baltimore's Harimoto out for 10 weeks
BALTIMORE - Baltimore's rightfielder Isao Harimoto hurt himself in the 6th inning while diving for a batted ball. He got up slowly and had to leave the game. Isao Harimoto will miss at least 10 weeks. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Dislocated Shoulder. Surgery will be performed next week. His season numbers are: .182 AVG, 8 hits, one double, no triples and 2 homeruns, along with 6 RBI and 8 runs scored.
Tuesday 4/12/1974: Jerry Walker (NYA) will miss 5-6 weeks
NEW YORK (A) - New York (A) is without its right-hander Jerry Walker for at least 5-6 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Steve Garvey in a game against Boston. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Strained Back Muscle which will require surgery.
Monday 4/11/1974: Mickey Lolich pitches his 1st shutout of the season
CALIFORNIA - Mickey Lolich had some fun again. Texas hitters did not. California's lefty gave up just 2 hits in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 20 career shutouts in 327 games started. Lolich (2-0) struck out 5 and walked 1, throwing 71 of 120 pitches for strikes. 'I had my stuff going. Everything I tried worked. What a day!' Bill Melton helped Lolich at the plate, he finished with 1 hit in 3 AB, homering once, with 2 RBI. California improved its record to 6-2, scoring 3 runs on 6 hits.
Monday 4/11/1974: Brooks Robinson stars with cycle against Cleveland
BALTIMORE - Brooks Robinson led Baltimore to a 10-6 win over Cleveland by squeezing four hits out of his bat. That's not the best part, though. He hit for the cycle as well! Number 2 in the 3rd inning, a shot estimated at 446 feet, cleared the wall in center field. A single in the 5th off Chuck Dobson accounted for his 3rd hit. A pitch from Chuck Dobson in the 7th inning left his bat for a two-run double. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Brooks did drive in 5 while scoring 2 runs on his own. This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 10 hits in 32 at bats, resulting in a .313 batting average. He becomes the 39th player in league history collect at least a single, double, triple and a homerun in a single game. Dave Concepcion was the last player to hit for the cycle, doing it 4/4/1974.

The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Detroit's Pete Rose Sr. this time, as the shortstop displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to Cincinnati's Johnny Bench this time, as the catcher displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. He hit .462 with 9 RBI and slugged 1.154 in 26 at bats.
Sunday 4/10/1974: Fred Talbot blanks New York (N) with a 2-hitter
MONTREAL - With his best stuff going, Montreal's Fred Talbot overmatched the opposing hitters all day long. New York (N) had no chance, collecting just 2 hits against the right-hander. 'I was able to keep´em off balance. That certainly helped.' Talbot (2-0) struck out 6 and walked 3, throwing 58 of 98 pitches for strikes. Clete Boyer helped Talbot at the plate, he finished with 2 hits in 4 AB, going deep twice, scoring two runs with 5 RBI. Montreal improved its record to 4-3, scoring 6 runs on 7 hits.

LOS ANGELES (N) - Dave Concepcion is a pretty good hitter, but his 4 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself considering that the hits added up to the cycle, one of the most difficult things to accomplish in baseball. A single in the 2nd off Les Cain accounted for his 1st hit. A pitch from Les Cain in the 3rd inning left his bat for a two-run homerun, landing 362 feet from home plate in left field. Hit number 3 followed in the 4th inning, a two-run triple. Number 4 in the 8th inning accounted for a double. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Dave scored 4 runs, and he collected 4 RBI as well! This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 5 hits in 7 at bats, resulting in a .714 batting average. He's now the 38th player in league history to hit for the cycle! Michiyo Arito was the last player to hit for the cycle, doing it 7/20/1973.
