Fritz Peterson pitched like a legend in May, and the American League named him Pitcher of the Month for his extraordinary performance. He went 5-0 in May and finished the month with an ERA of 1.43. He struck out 13 in 44 innings. Fritz fired two shutouts! Opposing players hit .192 against Fritz this season. While posting an ERA of 2.29 he went 7-1 in 11 starts, fanning 33 and walking 19 hitters. He has 6 complete games and 3 shutouts. He's 4th in the American League in ERA and 5th in wins! It's the 1st time that the National League Pitcher of the Month award goes to New York (N)'s pitcher Tom Seaver. He had an ERA of just 1.27 in 49.2 innings of work in which he struck out 34 hitters. Mike Rogodzinski of Detroit wins his 1st Batter of the Month award for putting up the best numbers in the American League. Mike pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .369 with 12 and 29 RBI while slugging .748. While compiling an on base percentage of .381, Mike hit .337 and slugged .658. He has collected 60 runs batted in this year. He's 6th in the American League in batting, 2nd in homeruns and 2nd in RBI! The National League Batter of the Month award goes to Reggie Smith, Cincinnati's starting rightfielder. Smith helped his team with an average of .364 and 28 RBI in 88 at bats. While compiling an on base percentage of .379, Reggie hit .305 and slugged .627. He has collected 49 runs batted in this year. He's 1st in the National League in RBIs and 1st in homeruns!
Monday 5/30/1974: Luis Tiant pitches his 2nd shutout of the season
SAN DIEGO - Los Angeles (N)'s right-hander Luis Tiant is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. San Diego found out the hard way, getting just one hit. Tiant 2nd shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 38th shutouts in his career. Tiant (9-2) fanned 4 and walked none, throwing 95 pitches. 'I really like to play baseball, and I love the way I was able to play it today.' Los Angeles (N)'s leftfielder Bernie Carbo went 2 for 5, homering once. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Tiant. Los Angeles (N) scored 2 runs on 10 hits.
Monday 5/30/1974: Detroit's Rogodzinski wins Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Mike Rogodzinski, Detroit's starting centerfielder. Mike was on fire, hitting .500 with 5 HR and 10 RBI. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 7 games. He now has homered in 4 consecutive games as well! He has hit 19 longballs while batting .343 this season. His 68 hits and 15 walks add up to a .388 on-base percentage. He's 4th in the American League in batting, 2nd in homeruns and 2nd in RBI! New York (N)'s catcher Joe Torre had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. He had an on base percentage of .556 and hit .520, while driving in 8 runs. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 9 game hitting streak right now. Thursday 5/26/1974: Steve Carlton quiets Chicago (A) bats with shutout
TEXAS - Steve Carlton took the mound and never left. And Chicago (A) hitters couldn't touch him at all. Texas' left-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 4 career shutouts in 175 games started. Carlton (4-3) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking 2, throwing 137 pitches. 'That was one of the best games of my career. I had my stuff working very well today.' Ted Simmons provided Texas with the offense Carlton needed as he went 2 for 4, stroking a double. The final score of the game was 5-0.
Thursday 5/26/1974: Bob Bailey punishes Cleveland with five hits
CLEVELAND - Bob Bailey punished Cleveland's pitching today, collecting five hits in 5 AB. That definitely helped Milwaukee, they won the game 12 to 2. A pitch from Dick Lange in the 2nd inning left his bat for a RBI double. His 3rd hit, off Jim Nash in the 4th inning, was a two-run homerun and cleared the fence in right field. His 5th hit, a solo homerun off Joe Hoerner in the 8th inning, landed an estimated 392 feet from home plate. He had singles in the 3rd and in the 6th . Bob did drive in 4 while scoring 3 runs on his own. He is hitting .266 this season, with 6 HR and 28 RBI.
