He now has 30 career shutouts in 608 games started. Jay (9-3) fanned 7 and walked none, throwing 88 pitches. 'I had a good grip on the ball today and I was able to put it where I wanted. BOSTON - Boston's shortstop Bobby Grich suffered a serious injury when he was struck by a pitch from Minnesota's Ron Taylor. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. Grich will probaby miss 6 weeks. After being taken to a local hospital, Grich was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Broken Hand. His season numbers are: .287 AVG, 66 hits, 24 doubles, 3 triples and 12 homeruns, along with 60 RBI and 44 runs scored.
Monday 6/13/1974: Lonborg (BOS) and Smith (CIN) win P.O.W. award
Jim Lonborg of Boston wins his 2nd Player of the Week award for dominating American League's hitters the entire week. Jim went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.50, while fanning 3 in 18 innings of work. Dilauro (5-6) struck out 2 and issued 1 BB, throwing 63 of 101 pitches for strikes. 'I really like to play baseball, and I love the way I was able to play it today. I still cannot believe I did it.' Friday 6/3/1974: New York (N)'s Orlando Cepeda slams five hits
NEW YORK (N) - 'You know, in batting practice I didn't really feel that comfortable about my stroke today, but baseball is more than hitting. Then, when you're not trying to force a hit, you slug them in droves,' says Orlando Cepeda after his 5 hit game, which New York (N) won 29-2 against San Francisco. A pitch from Les Cain in the 3rd inning left his bat for a two-run homerun, landing 420 feet from home plate in center field. In the 5th inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Ozzie Osborn. He collected singles in the 1st (one RBI) , in the 3rd inning and in the 8th inning . Orlando scored 3 runs, and he collected 5 RBI as well! He is hitting .283 this season, with 9 HR and 38 RBI.
