I'm going to try to work through these amateurs a little bit at a time, I'll provide brief updates as I go. Would love to have these close to done as the season finishes.
It's not a very good or a very deep class, so you may want to keep that in mind as you discuss trades leading up to the trade deadline.
The Catchers:
Not a lot here, one probable sure-fire starter, another fringe starter and a few decent backup possibilities. The best of the lot is..............
Butch Wynegar- Will be 19 years old on opening day, goes AVG/AVG/P/F/G/G and is very highly developed for a teenager. Probably needs a year, two tops
before he'll be ready. Bat is mediocre but could play with a bump to the hits, and it may be worth your while, as his defense is really what he is known for.
B range, A arm. 2 time All-Star, had 13 year career, mostly with the Twins, then signed by the Yankees, when the Twins were kind of acting like the Yankees
farm club, before finally finishing his career with the Angels. Is worthy of a 2nd round pick, may go late 1st in this class.
Rick Cerone- Will spend most of the 75 season as a 21 year old, similar in ratings to Wynegar, AVG/AVG/F/F/AVG/G, won't get on base as much, also very good behind
the plate, B range, B arm, but will need a lot of development. Is probably 4-5 years away. Had an 18 year career, mostly as a backup, and played on 8 different teams,
but I remember him on those Yankee playoff teams in 80-81. Late 2nd/early 3rd.
Bruce Bochy- Will be 20 years old as we open 75, goes AVG across the board except P in triples, average defensively (C/C) and needs quite a bit of development. Could end up as a starter some day, especially with some PD bumps. 9 year career as backup C for Astros and Padres, and of course, now manager of the Giants.
There is really nobody else to mention outside of a few guys that if they get lucky could get a look as a backup C. Jerry Narron is among that bunch. Rick Sweet is also a name worth mentioning, more of a defensive specialist, but could get a look.
