Friday 7/1/1974: Peterson and Billingham receive Pitcher of the Month award
Fritz Peterson pitched like a legend in June, and the American League named him Pitcher of the Month for his extraordinary performance. He struck out 13 hitters in his 5 starts, putting together a record of 5-0 while pitching 13 innings. His ERA in June was 1.74. Fritz has a record of 12-1 this season, with an ERA of 2.12. In 135.2 Innings he was able to strike out 46 batters. He has 10 complete games and 3 shutouts. He's 4th in the American League in ERA and 2nd in wins! It's the 2nd time that the American League Batter of the Month award goes to Detroit's centerfielder Mike Rogodzinski. Mike was on fire, hitting .311 with 9 homeruns and 30 RBI. His season numbers are: .328 AVG, 101 hits, 8 doubles, 4 triples and 28 longballs, along with 90 RBI and 64 runs scored. He's 4th in the American League in batting, 2nd in homeruns and 1st in RBI! The Batter of the Month award in the National League goes to Cincinnati's Reggie Smith this time, as the rightfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. In 93 at bats he hit .333 with 9 HR and 21 RBI. Reggie is hitting .315 this year, with 85 hits in 270 at bats. He has driven in 70 runs, slugging .648. He's 4th in the National League in batting, 1st in homeruns and 1st in RBI!
Thursday 6/30/1974: Mike G. Marshall turns in great performance against Cleveland
CLEVELAND - Cleveland's offense is struggling, and Chicago (A)'s Mike G. Marshall didn't help them. The right-hander fired his 2nd shutout of the season, a 2-hitter. Marshall (6-5) struck out 2 and walked 2, throwing 60 of 104 pitches for strikes. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today.' The hitting star for Chicago (A) was centerfielder Willie Montanez, he finished 1 for 4, stroking a double, and driving in 2 runs. The final score of the game was 4-0.
Wednesday 6/29/1974: Gene Brabender fires NO-NO against Philadelphia
NEW YORK (N) - Gene Brabender had some fun again. REAL fun. Philadelphia hitters did not. New York (N)'s right-hander fired a no-hitter in his 4th shutout of the season. He now has 34 career shutouts in 334 games started. 'I really like to play baseball, and I love the way I was able to play it today. I still cannot believe I did it.' Brabender (9-7) struck out 6 and walked 1, throwing 62 of 100 pitches for strikes. The hitting star for New York (N) was leftfielder Orlando Cepeda, he went 1 for 3, hitting a homerun. New York (N) scored 1 run on 3 hits.
Monday 6/27/1974: Houston's McRae wins Player of the Week award
It's the 1st time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Boston's centerfielder Alex George. Alex went 9 for 20 (.450), while hitting 2 HR and collecting 8 RBI. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to Houston's Hal McRae this time, as the leftfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Hal went 12 for 23 (.522), while hitting 4 HR and collecting 9 RBI. His season numbers are: .287 AVG, 83 hits, 16 doubles, 3 triples and 14 homeruns, along with 48 RBI and 54 runs scored.
Saturday 6/25/1974: Jim Bibby turns in great performance against Pittsburgh
PITTSBURGH - Jim Bibby took the mound and never left. And Pittsburgh hitters couldn't touch him at all. Philadelphia's right-hander gave up just one hit in his 4th shutout of the season. He now has 16 career shutouts in 161 games started. 'I had a good grip on the ball today and I was able to put it where I wanted. That kept them out of balance.' Bibby (10-3) was overpowering, fanning 12 while walking none, throwing 116 pitches. Bob Aspromonte helped Bibby at the plate, he went 3 for 5, homering once, scoring three times. Philadelphia improved its record to 40-34, scoring 9 runs on 12 hits.
Saturday 6/25/1974: Baltimore's Bunker out for 6 weeks
BALTIMORE - Baltimore is without its right-hander Wally Bunker for at least 6 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Thurman Munson in a game against New York (A). His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After being taken to a local hospital, Bunker was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Torn Tricep Muscle. Opposing players hit .320 against Wally this season. While posting an ERA of 6.42 he went 5-8 in 19 starts, fanning 47 and walking 27 hitters.
Saturday 6/25/1974: Boston's Carl Yastrzemski laces 2000th career hit
CALIFORNIA - Boston's rightfielder Carl Yastrzemski was in good mood after the game against California, and he had every reason as he made some history while collecting his 2000th career hit. His hit in the 1st inning was a single off Jim McGlothlin. His best year so far was 1971 where he hit .312 with 13 homeruns and 94 RBI. 'This day is special, I'll probably remember it my whole life. Thank god I'm blessed with the talent to play this game.'
