Wednesday 7/27/1974: Baltimore's Stone severely injured
BALTIMORE - Baltimore's southpaw George H. Stone suffered a severe injury on Wednesday and will be out for at least 5 weeks. In the 5th of the game against Boston he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Strained Back Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. His ERA of 3.59 helped him to a 9-11 record this year. He struck out 122 and walked 44 in 170.2 innings.
Monday 7/25/1974: Allen and Gardner win Player of the Week award
The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to New York (A)'s Dick Allen this time, as the centerfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Dick pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .414 with 5 HR and 9 RBI while slugging 1.000. Allen has hit for a .355 average this season. He has 39 extra base hits along with 215 total bases, resulting in a .596 slugging percentage. He's 1st in the American League in batting, 4th in homeruns and 9th in RBI! Los Angeles (N)'s pitcher Rob Gardner had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Rob went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00, while fanning 17 in 18 innings of work. He pitched two shutouts!
