ATLANTA - Great days are rare. But not for Los Angeles (N)'s right-hander Luis Tiant. Atlanta found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just one hit. It's his 4th shutout this season, and the 40th time he has done it in his career. With no outs in the 6th inning Frank Fernandez doubled to break up the no-hitter. Tiant (17-6) fanned 6 and walked none, throwing 79 pitches. 'I had my stuff going. Everything I tried worked. What a day!' Los Angeles (N)'s third baseman John Orsino stroked 2 hits in 4 AB, hitting a homerun, scoring 2 runs with 2 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Tiant. The final score of the game was 8-0.
Monday 8/1/1974: Jim Bethke turns in great performance against Montreal
MONTREAL - Jim Bethke took the mound and never left. And Montreal hitters couldn't touch him at all. Philadelphia's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 5 career shutouts in 91 games started. Bethke (9-6) fanned 9 and walked 1, throwing 126 pitches. 'Pitching a great game is always a good thing. And it doesn't get much better than today.' Philadelphia's rightfielder Nate Colbert went 1 for 4. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Bethke. Philadelphia improved its record to 59-45, scoring 1 run on 4 hits.
Monday 8/1/1974: Shamsky (MIL) and Seaver (NYM) win P.O.W. award
It's the 3rd time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Milwaukee's rightfielder Art Shamsky. Art went 11 for 20 (.550), while hitting 1 HR and collecting 7 RBI. Tom Seaver of New York (N) wins his 4th Player of the Week award for dominating National League's hitters the entire week. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 0.50 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well.
Monday 8/1/1974: New York (N)'s Seaver named Pitcher of the Month
It's the 1st time that the American League Pitcher of the Month award goes to Detroit's pitcher Joe H. Coleman. He struck out 25 hitters in his 6 starts, putting together a record of 5-1 while pitching 25 innings. His ERA in July was 1.92. Joe H. also fired a shutout. This season Coleman compiled an ERA of 3.93, going 14-6 in 23 starts. He fanned 84 while giving up 155 hits in 165 innings. Joe H. has pitched 2 shutouts and 6 complete games.
