Monday 8/15/1974: San Francisco's Buckner wins Player of the Week award
Bobby Bonds from California wins his 5th Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. Bobby pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .458 with 3 HR and 8 RBI while slugging .917. Bonds has hit for a .284 average this season. He has 40 extra base hits along with 204 total bases, resulting in a .487 slugging percentage. San Francisco's leftfielder Bill Buckner had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Bill pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .462 with 2 HR and 7 RBI while slugging .769. This year Buckner drove in 44 and scored 38 runs while batting .274 with 8 homeruns.
Sunday 8/14/1974: Chicago (N)'s Grant severely injured
CHICAGO (N) - Chicago (N)'s ace Mudcat Grant suffered a severe injury on Sunday and will be out for at least 4-5 weeks. In the 1st of the game against St. Louis he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Strained Elbow Ligament which will require surgery. This season Grant compiled an ERA of 4.27, going 5-11 in 20 starts. He fanned 101 while giving up 127 hits in 141.1 innings.
Sunday 8/14/1974: Minnesota's Pappas severely injured
MINNESOTA - Minnesota's right-hander Milt Pappas will not pitch again this year, suffering a serious injury in the game against Chicago (A) on Sunday. Pappas was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Torn Bicep Muscle. This season Pappas compiled an ERA of 3.65, going 8-10 in 26 starts. He fanned 107 while giving up 135 hits in 180 innings.
Monday 8/8/1974: Baltimore's Palmer out for full season
BALTIMORE - Baltimore's ace Jim Palmer will not pitch again this year, suffering a serious injury in the game against Texas on Monday. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Torn Bicep Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. Jim has a record of 11-14 this season, with an ERA of 3.71. In 223.1 Innings he was able to strike out 134 batters. Jim has pitched 2 shutouts and 10 complete games.

The American League Player of the Week award goes to Geoff Zahn, one of Milwaukee's best starting pitchers. Zahn was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00. Along the way he struck out 9 in 18 innings. He pitched two shutouts! Opposing players hit .255 against Geoff this season. While posting an ERA of 3.63 he went 8-8 in 21 starts, fanning 99 and walking 38 hitters. Geoff has pitched 2 shutouts and 8 complete games. The National League's best player of the week was San Diego's Mike Joyce, who wins the award for the 3rd time in his career. Joyce was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00. Along the way he struck out 13 in 16.2 innings. He hurled a shutout as well.

PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia is without its ace Jim Bibby for at least 5 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Clete Boyer in a game against Montreal. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Strained Rotator Cuff Muscle. Jim has a record of 16-4 this season, with an ERA of 2.30. In 215.2 Innings he was able to strike out 187 batters. He has 11 complete games and 4 shutouts. He's 8th in the National League in ERA and 3rd in wins!
