Thursday 9/1/1974: Boston's Watt earns Pitcher of the Month award
Boston's Eddie Watt had a terrific August, and it earned him the American League Pitcher of the month award. He had an ERA of just 1.20 in 52.1 innings of work in which he struck out 29 hitters. His record in August is 5-0. Eddie pitched a shutout as well. This season Watt compiled an ERA of 2.59, going 16-4 in 24 starts. He fanned 115 while giving up 147 hits in 191.1 innings. Eddie has pitched 2 shutouts and 10 complete games. He's 4th in the American League in ERA and 9th in wins! New York (N)'s pitcher Gene Brabender is the National League winner of the Pitcher of the Month award in August. He had an ERA of just 1.74 in 57 innings of work in which he struck out 39 hitters. His record in August is 7-0. Gene pitched a shutout as well. His ERA of 2.51 helped him to a 19-10 record this year. He struck out 177 and walked 46 in 247.2 innings. The American League's best player of the month was Detroit's Pete Rose Sr., who wins the award for the 13th time in his career. Rose Sr. helped his team with an average of .346 and 27 RBI in 107 at bats. He has hit 29 bombs while batting .323 this season. His 155 hits and 82 walks add up to a .425 on-base percentage. He's 6th in the American League in batting, 7th in homeruns and 3rd in RBI! New York (N)'s first baseman Dick Dietz had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Batter of the Month. In 98 at bats he hit .347 with 11 HR and 27 RBI. He has hit 33 taters while batting .275 this season. His 130 hits and 58 walks add up to a .365 on-base percentage. He's 2nd in the National League in RBIs and 2nd in homeruns!
Wednesday 8/31/1974: Jim Bethke out for 6-7 weeks
PHILADELPHIA - When it rains, it pours. Philadelphia's right-hander Jim Bethke will not pitch for at least 6-7 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against St. Louis where he left the field in the 8th inning. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Strained Elbow Ligament. Surgery will be performed next week. Jim has a record of 11-9 this season, with an ERA of 2.93. In 208.2 Innings he was able to strike out 156 batters. He has 11 complete games and one shutout.
Monday 8/29/1974: Player of the Week honors go to Ellis and Jones
It's the 1st time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Texas' pitcher Dock Ellis. Ellis was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.50. Along the way he struck out 10 in 18 innings. He hurled a shutout as well. It's the 3rd time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Atlanta's third baseman Mack Jones. Mack was on fire, hitting .520 with 3 HR and 10 RBI. His season features a batting average of .322 (134 hits in 416 AB), 22 doubles, 6 triples and 10 bombs. Jones collected 73 RBI and 61 runs as well. He's 1st in the National League in batting!
Sunday 8/28/1974: Chicago (N) has no chance in a 2-hitter by Vicente Romo
ATLANTA - Vicente Romo had his best stuff going, and Chicago (N) hitters were chanceless. Atlanta's right-hander fired a 2-hitter, his 1st shutout of the season. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Romo (3-2) fanned 8 and walked 3, throwing 117 pitches. Mack Jones helped Romo at the plate, he got 3 hits in 4 AB, hitting two dingers, scoring 2 runs and collecting 5 RBI. Atlanta improved its record to 64-65, scoring 7 runs on 6 hits.
Saturday 8/27/1974: Gary Nolan (CIN) will miss 7 weeks
CINCINNATI - Cincinnati's right-hander Gary Nolan suffered a severe injury on Saturday and will be out for at least 7 weeks. In the 1st of the game against Houston he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Nolan was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Spasms Back. Gary has a record of 10-8 this season, with an ERA of 3.53. In 183.2 Innings he was able to strike out 134 batters.
Thursday 8/25/1974: Pittsburgh's Hughes severely injured
PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh's right-hander Jim M. Hughes suffered a severe injury on Thursday and will be out for at least 4-5 weeks. In the 2nd of the game against Atlanta he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Pittsburgh wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Hughes had suffered a Bone Chips Elbow. Opposing players hit .284 against Jim M. this season. While posting an ERA of 6.00 he went 4-20 in 32 starts, fanning 176 and walking 109 hitters. He has 10 complete games and one shutout.
Thursday 8/25/1974: Harry Parker turns in great performance against Minnesota
KANSAS CITY - Harry Parker had some fun again. Minnesota hitters did not. Kansas City's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 4th shutout of the season. He now has 7 career shutouts in 142 games started. Parker (14-8) struck out 2 and walked 1, throwing 72 of 121 pitches for strikes. 'I was hitting my spots. Now I'll start concentrating on my next start, and hopefully it will work again.' Kansas City's centerfielder Bobby Tolan collected 4 hits in 5 trips to the plate, hitting 2 doubles, and driving in 4 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Parker. Kansas City scored 14 runs on 16 hits.
