Thursday 9/15/1974: St. Louis' Gene Tenace slams five hits
ATLANTA - Gene Tenace saw the ball really well, leading St. Louis to a 20-3 win over Atlanta. His five hits thrilled his teammates and coaches, and Gene seemed happy as well after the game. His 3rd hit, a three-run homerun off Jim B. Weaver in the 4th inning, landed an estimated 401 feet from home plate. His 5th hit, off Ron Willis in the 8th inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in center field. He had singles in the 1st (one RBI) , in the 2nd and in the 6th (two RBIs). Gene did drive in 7 while scoring 3 runs on his own. He is hitting .265 this season, with 21 HR and 72 RBI.
Monday 9/12/1974: Clay Kirby dominates Baltimore, throws NO-HITTER
MINNESOTA - Minnesota's right-hander Clay Kirby made some history today, firing a no-hitter against Baltimore. Their hitters found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, never having a chance against his overpowering stuff. 'Well, the ball went where I wanted it. I was able to hit the corners with all of my pitches. I'm so happy that it was enough to pitch such a great game.' Kirby (19-9) struck out 3 and walked 3, throwing 59 of 110 pitches for strikes. Merv Rettenmund helped Kirby at the plate, he collected 2 hits in 3 trips to the plate, hitting a double, and collecting 2 RBI. Minnesota scored 5 runs on 9 hits.
Monday 9/12/1974: Roger Nelson shuts out Boston on one hit
BOSTON - Detroit's right-hander Roger Nelson is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Boston on just one hit. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 12th time he has done it in his career. With no outs in the 9th inning Jerry McNertney doubled to break up the no-hitter. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Nelson (21-5) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 6. Carlos May provided Detroit with the offense Nelson needed as he collected 2 hits in 4 trips to the plate, homering once, stroking a double, and collecting 3 RBI. Detroit scored 6 runs on 10 hits.

CALIFORNIA - Great days are rare. But not for California's right-hander Jim McGlothlin. Cleveland found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 10th time he has done it in his career. McGlothlin (17-9) struck out 6 and issued 2 BB, throwing 78 of 121 pitches for strikes. 'I hit the corners with all of my pitches. That helped a lot!' The hitting star for California was rightfielder Bobby Bonds, he stroked 1 hit in 4 AB, hitting a homerun, and collecting 3 RBI. The final score of the game was 7-0.
Monday 9/12/1974: New York (A)'s Dwyer wins Player of the Week award
It's the 1st time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to New York (A)'s leftfielder Jim Dwyer. He had an on base percentage of .480 and hit .429, while driving in 9 runs. This year Dwyer drove in 71 and scored 72 runs while batting .293 with 13 bombs. The National League Player of the Week award goes to Gene Brabender, one of New York (N)'s best starting pitchers. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 0.50 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well. In 34 starts this year Gene struck out 202 batters in 273 innings of work. His ERA is 2.34, his record 22-10. Gene has pitched 7 shutouts and 14 complete games. He's 7th in the National League in ERA and 2nd in wins!

SAN FRANCISCO - It was a great day for San Francisco's right-hander Tom A. Murphy. The 28-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 2-hitter, against Houston on Saturday. 'I didn't feel that I had good stuff while warming up. But it got better the more I threw the ball. I guess I was lucky.' Murphy (8-18) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 5. Milt May provided San Francisco with the offense Murphy needed as he finished with 2 hits in 3 AB. San Francisco scored 1 run on 5 hits.
