Saturday 10/1/1974: Peterson and Niekro receive Pitcher of the Month award
Oakland's pitcher Fritz Peterson is the American League winner of the Pitcher of the Month award in September. He started 5 games in September, going 4-0 and compiling an ERA of 0.63 in 43 innings. Fritz fanned 10 hitters. Fritz also fired a shutout. His ERA of 2.00 helped him to a 23-4 record this year. He struck out 95 and walked 46 in 270.1 innings. It's the 4th time that the American League Batter of the Month award goes to New York (A)'s centerfielder Dick Allen. Allen helped his team with an average of .447 and 22 RBI in 103 at bats. He has hit 35 homeruns while batting .365 this season. His 212 hits and 83 walks add up to a .445 on-base percentage. He's 1st in the American League in batting, 8th in homeruns and 8th in RBI! The National League's best player of the month was New York (N)'s Tony Conigliaro, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Wednesday 9/28/1974: Gaylord Perry fires NO-NO against Chicago (N)
CHICAGO (N) - Gaylord Perry had some fun again. REAL fun. Chicago (N) hitters did not. New York (N)'s right-hander fired a no-hitter in his 3rd shutout of the season. He now has 38 career shutouts in 382 games started. Perry (21-9) struck out 7 and issued 4 BB, throwing 69 of 129 pitches for strikes. 'Well, the ball went where I wanted it. I was able to hit the corners with all of my pitches. I'm so happy that it was enough to pitch such a great game.' New York (N)'s centerfielder Tony Conigliaro stroked 1 hit in 4 AB. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Perry. New York (N) improved its record to 100-58, scoring 3 runs on 6 hits.
Monday 9/26/1974: Fred Newman turns in great performance against Cleveland
TEXAS - Texas' right-hander Fred Newman is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Cleveland on just 2 hits. It's his 5th shutout this season, and the 23rd time he has done it in his career. Newman (11-13) fanned 2 and walked 5, throwing 110 pitches. 'Pitching a great game is always a good thing. And it doesn't get much better than today.' The hitting star for Texas was second baseman Phil Garner, he collected 3 hits in 4 trips to the plate, blasting a homerun, scoring 2 runs. In the 8th of the game against St. Louis he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. After being taken to a local hospital, Barrios was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Bone Chips Shoulder. Francisco has a record of 6-27 this season, with an ERA of 6.54. In 246.1 Innings he was able to strike out 97 batters.
Friday 9/23/1974: New York (N)'s Joe Torre laces 2000th career hit
PITTSBURGH - New York (N)'s Joe Torre showed a smile on his face after he got his 2000th career hit against Pittsburgh on Friday. In 11 years of big league action so far, Joe has compiled a batting average of .303, along with 167 homeruns and 860 RBI. 'I guess I'll celebrate a bit today. But the most important thing is winning, and my whole career I gave everything I could to help my team.' His hit in the 5th inning was a single off Ernie McAnally.
