Friday 10/28/1974: San Diego's Sutton named Cy Young Award
All the hard work finally paid off for Detroit's Larry Bearnarth. The right-hander was named the Cy Young Award winner in the American League today. This season Bearnarth compiled an ERA of 2.35, going 27-5 in 38 starts. He fanned 136 while giving up 228 hits in 306 innings. He has 18 complete games and 6 shutouts. He's 3rd in the American League in ERA and 1st in wins! Bearnarth wins the award for the 2nd time in his 8-year career. Don Sutton will never forget this year. His dominating season convinced the National League to name San Diego's right-hander the Cy Young Award winner of 1974. In 38 starts this year Don struck out 285 batters in 321.1 innings of work. His ERA is 1.96, his record 26-7. He has 17 complete games and 3 shutouts. He's 2nd in the National League in ERA and 1st in wins!

Detroit's centerfielder Mike Rogodzinski will never forget this day. A great season convinced the voters that he is the worthy American League Most Valuable Player Award winner. Mike has gone 192 for 617 (.311) this season, hitting 41 homeruns and driving in 159 runs. He has scored 106 runs on his own. He's 7th in the American League in batting, 2nd in homeruns and 1st in RBI! New York (N)'s first baseman Dick Dietz had a fabulous season as well, no doubt about it. The National League shared this opinion and names the 33 year old the Most Valuable Player Award winner! This year Dietz drove in 120 and scored 107 runs while batting .279 with 41 homeruns. He's 1st in the National League in RBIs and 1st in homeruns!

The American League Rookie of the Year Award winner was announced today, with Detroit's centerfielder Mike Rogodzinski earning the trophy for putting up the best numbers among rookies in his league. His season features a batting average of .311 (192 hits in 617 AB), 19 doubles, 6 triples and 41 homeruns. Rogodzinski collected 159 RBI and 106 runs as well. He's 7th in the American League in batting, 2nd in homeruns and 1st in RBI! The National League Rookie of the Year Award winner was announced today as well, with Houston's pitcher Don Gullett earning the trophy for putting up the best numbers among rookies in his league.
