Breaking News
Monday 4/18/1975: Houston's Evans wins Player of the Week award
Kansas City's shortstop Alex Johnson had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. In 28 at bats he hit .500 with 2 HR and 6 RBI. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 7 games. The National League's best player of the week was Houston's Darrell Evans, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Darrell was on fire, hitting .458 with 3 HR and 15 RBI.
Sunday 4/17/1975: Lee May out for 4-5 weeks
ST. LOUIS - Being hit with a pitch is no fun at all. Especially when you get injured. St. Louis' first baseman Lee May will miss about 4-5 weeks after being hit by Bert Blyleven in the 4th inning of the game between St. Louis and Houston. Fractured Hand was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. His season features a batting average of .184 (9 hits in 49 AB), no doubles, no triples and 2 taters. May collected 4 RBI and 5 runs as well.
Monday 4/11/1975: Baltimore's May wins Player of the Week award
It's the 1st time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Baltimore's first baseman Carlos May. Carlos pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .600 with 5 HR and 11 RBI while slugging 1.320. Duke Sims from Philadelphia wins his 3rd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. Duke went 14 for 29 (.483), while hitting 2 HR and collecting 6 RBI.
Friday 4/8/1975: Joe Moeller fires NO-NO against Atlanta
ATLANTA - Joe Moeller had his best stuff going, and Atlanta hitters were chanceless. Philadelphia's right-hander fired a NO-NO, his 1st shutout of the season. Moeller (1-0) struck out 6 and issued 5 BB, throwing 63 of 111 pitches for strikes. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Roger Metzger helped Moeller at the plate, he finished with 3 hits in 6 AB. Philadelphia improved its record to 4-1, scoring 6 runs on 13 hits.
Thursday 4/7/1975: Larry Bowa hits for the cycle against Philadelphia
ATLANTA - Larry Bowa led Atlanta to a 14-13 win over Philadelphia by squeezing four hits out of his bat. That's not the best part, though. He hit for the cycle as well! A single in the 3rd off Doug Rau accounted for his 1st hit. A 368 foot drive to left field marked his 2nd hit, a three-run homerun off Doug Rau in the 6th inning. A pitch from Jim Strickland in the 11th inning left his bat for a two-run triple. Number 4 in the 13th inning accounted for a double. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Larry scored 2 runs, and he collected 5 RBI as well! He's having a very good season so far, batting .333. 42 players in league history have so far hit for the cycle, including Larry. On 9/21/1974, Cesar Cedeno was the last player to hit for the cycle.
Thursday 4/7/1975: Bobby Floyd punishes Atlanta with five hits
ATLANTA - Bobby Floyd hits 'em where they ain't. Atlanta certainly agrees as Philadelphia's shortstop unloaded five hits, adding to his reputation of being one of the best pure hitters in the game. In the 1st inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Bill Short. A 432 foot drive to right-center marked his 2nd hit, a two-run homerun off Bill Short in the 2nd inning. He collected singles in the 4th inning , in the 6th inning and in the 11th (two RBIs). Bobby did drive in 5 while scoring 2 runs on his own. This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 6 hits in 12 at bats, resulting in a .500 batting average. The final score of the game was 14-13.
Tuesday 4/5/1975: Jim Palmer pitches his 1st shutout of the season
CINCINNATI - Cincinnati's bats were sleeping, and Pittsburgh's Jim Palmer gave them no chance to wake up. He gave up just 2 hits in recording his 1st shutout of the season. With no outs in the 7th inning Cesar Cedeno doubled to break up the no-hitter. Palmer (1-0) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 5. 'I had a good grip on the ball today and I was able to put it where I wanted. That kept them out of balance.' Mike Rogodzinski provided Pittsburgh with the offense Palmer needed as he finished with 2 hits in 4 AB, homering once, doubling once. Pittsburgh improved its record to 1-2, scoring 3 runs on 11 hits.
Tuesday 4/5/1975: Burt Hooton fires 1-hitter against St. Louis
ST. LOUIS - Chicago (N)'s right-hander Burt Hooton will never forget this day. The 25-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 1-hitter, against St. Louis on Tuesday. 'Giving my team a chance to win is the most important thing for me. I was able to do it today.' Hooton (1-0) struck out 7 and walked 2, throwing 75 of 116 pitches for strikes. Chicago (N)'s third baseman Ron Santo finished with 2 hits in 4 AB. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Hooton. The final score of the game was 4-0.
Monday 4/4/1975: Detroit's Davey Johnson unloads three times
DETROIT - Detroit beat Kansas City 12-2, but that was not the real story of the game. Davey Johnson was, as he went deep three times. A pitch from Rich Beck in the 5th inning left his bat for a two-run homerun, landing 390 feet from home plate in right-center. His 2nd blast, a two-run homerun off Bill Gogolewski in the 7th inning, landed an estimated 326 feet from home plate. In the 8th inning he unloaded a two-run homerun off Bill Gogolewski. Overall he stroked 3 hits in 5 AB, scoring three runs and collecting 6 RBI. His homerun total this year is 3, along with 6 RBI. On 5/9/1974, Reggie Jackson was the last player to hit 3 dingers in a single game.
