Monday 5/16/1975: Player of the Week honors go to McCarver and Salmon
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Tim McCarver, Detroit's starting catcher. He hit .455 with 13 RBI and slugged 1.136 in 22 at bats. McCarver has hit for a .321 average this season. He has 16 extra base hits along with 76 total bases, resulting in a .580 slugging percentage. He's 7th in the American League in batting, 8th in homeruns and 6th in RBI! Chico Salmon wins his 1st Player of the Week award. National League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. He had an on base percentage of .640 and hit .609, while driving in 8 runs. Chico managed to drive in at least one run in every game he played this week. Salmon has hit for a .386 average this season. He has 12 extra base hits along with 79 total bases, resulting in a .564 slugging percentage. He's 1st in the National League in batting and 6th in RBI!
Sunday 5/15/1975: Carlos May slams 3 HR
TEXAS - Carlos May powered Baltimore to a 10-7 win over Texas. He did it in style by homering three times. His 1st shot, off Dock Ellis in the 4th inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in left-center. His 2nd blast, a two-run homerun off Dock Ellis in the 5th inning, landed an estimated 384 feet from home plate. In the 9th inning he unloaded a two-run homerun off John Hiller. Overall he finished 3 for 5, scoring three times and driving in 5 runs. So far this season he is batting .308 with 12 homers and 32 RBI. Davey Johnson was the last player to hit 3 homeruns in a game, doing it 4/4/1975.
Saturday 5/14/1975: Rich Beck quiets Minnesota bats with shutout
MINNESOTA - Great days are rare. But not for Kansas City's right-hander Rich Beck. Minnesota found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 35th time he has done it in his career. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today.' Beck (3-2) struck out 5 and issued 2 BB, throwing 71 of 120 pitches for strikes. George Hendrick provided Kansas City with the offense Beck needed as he collected 3 hits in 4 trips to the plate, blasting a homerun, hitting a double, scoring 2 runs. Kansas City scored 6 runs on 7 hits.
Friday 5/13/1975: Don Drysdale blanks Atlanta with a 2-hitter
ATLANTA - Age doesn't matter. At least Cincinnati's right-hander Don Drysdale shares this opinion. The 38 year old pitched a 2-hit shutout against Atlanta, recording his 2nd shutout of the season. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Drysdale (5-1) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 5. Cincinnati's leftfielder Cesar Cedeno finished 2 for 5, stroking a double, scoring twice and collecting 2 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Drysdale. Cincinnati improved its record to 22-14, scoring 5 runs on 10 hits.
