Wednesday 6/1/1975: Beck (KCR) and Drysdale (CIN) win monthly pitcher award
Rich Beck pitched like a legend in May, and the American League named him Pitcher of the Month for his extraordinary performance. He went 4-0 in May and finished the month with an ERA of 1.42. He struck out 27 in 44.1 innings. Rich got two complete game shutouts as well! Opposing players hit .172 against Rich this season. While posting an ERA of 2.87 he went 5-2 in 10 starts, fanning 46 and walking 17 hitters. Rich has pitched 2 shutouts and 3 complete games. Cincinnati's Don Drysdale had a terrific May, and it earned him the National League Pitcher of the month award. His record of 4-0 in 5 was among the leagues best this month. He had an on base percentage of .370 and hit .311, while driving in 29 runs. His season numbers are: .297 AVG, 52 hits, 8 doubles, 3 triples and 12 bombs, along with 43 RBI and 25 runs scored. He's 3rd in the American League in RBIs and 5th in homeruns! The Batter of the Month award in the National League goes to Pittsburgh's Willie Crawford this time, as the rightfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. BOSTON - Boston's right-hander Eddie Watt is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Detroit found out the hard way, getting just one hit. Watt 3rd shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 37th shutouts in his career. Watt (6-4) was overpowering, fanning 12 while walking 1, throwing 118 pitches. 'Pitching a great game is always a good thing. And it doesn't get much better than today.' Boston's leftfielder Tony Conigliaro finished 3 for 4, going deep twice, scoring 2 runs and collecting 4 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Watt. Boston improved its record to 31-20, scoring 7 runs on 10 hits.
Monday 5/30/1975: Kinugasa and Thomas win Player of the Week award
Kansas City's leftfielder Sachio Kinugasa had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Sachio was on fire, hitting .400 with 4 HR and 11 RBI. While compiling an on base percentage of .389, Sachio hit .308 and slugged .604. He has collected 43 runs batted in this year. He's 3rd in the American League in RBIs and 4th in homeruns! Friday 5/27/1975: Tony Horton (CAL) will miss full season
CALIFORNIA - California's third baseman Tony Horton suffered a season ending injury when he hurt himself firing a ball to first base. He collapsed in pain after the throw and was helped off the field. California wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Horton had suffered a Torn Rotator Cuff Muscle. Horton has hit 8 longballs this year while batting .205. He adds 7 doubles, along with 21 runs scored.
Thursday 5/26/1975: Rico Carty nabs five hits against Baltimore
BALTIMORE - Kansas City's rightfielder Rico Carty accomplished a difficult feat in a 22-0 win over Baltimore, drilling five hits to improve his career batting average to .255! His 2nd hit, a solo homerun off Wally Bunker in the 3rd inning, cleared the fence in right-center. His 3rd hit, off Jim Willoughby in the 5th inning, was a two-run homerun and cleared the fence in left field. He had singles in the 1st (one RBI) , in the 7th and in the 9th . CLEVELAND - Milwaukee's right-hander Steve Rogers is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Cleveland found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. MILWAUKEE - 'Wow, five hits in one game is something special, isn't it?' said Boston's shortstop Bobby Grich after the 6-4 win over Milwaukee. His 1st hit was a double off Jerry Reuss in the 1st inning. His 2nd hit, a solo homerun off Jerry Reuss in the 3rd inning, landed an estimated 456 feet from home plate.
