Wednesday 7/20/1975: Ken McMullen out for 8 weeks
CALIFORNIA - California's season has taken a hit after one of their best players, third baseman Ken McMullen, injured himself while rounding a base. He is likely to miss 8 weeks. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Pulled Anterior Cruciate Ligament. Surgery will be performed next week. While compiling an on base percentage of .299, Ken hit .270 and slugged .417. He has collected 32 runs batted in this year.
Wednesday 7/20/1975: Kansas City has no chance in a NO-HITTER by Larry Bearnarth
KANSAS CITY - Detroit's right-hander Larry Bearnarth made some history today, firing a no-hitter against Kansas City. Their hitters found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, never having a chance against his overpowering stuff. Bearnarth (15-6) struck out 3 and issued 2 BB, throwing 59 of 104 pitches for strikes. 'I hit the corners with all of my pitches. That helped a lot!' Yutaka Fukumoto provided Detroit with the offense Bearnarth needed as he finished with 2 hits in 4 AB. The final score of the game was 1-0.
Monday 7/18/1975: Upshaw and Fiore win Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Cecil Upshaw, one of New York (A)'s best starting pitchers. Cecil went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.53, while fanning 5 in 17 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. Cecil has a record of 12-7 this season, with an ERA of 2.77. In 181.2 Innings he was able to strike out 45 batters. He has 13 complete games and 3 shutouts. He's 5th in the American League in ERA and 5th in wins! Chicago (N)'s rightfielder Mike Fiore had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Mike was on fire, hitting .579 with 2 HR and 6 RBI.
Friday 7/15/1975: Larry Bearnarth quiets Texas bats with shutout
DETROIT - Larry Bearnarth took the mound and never left. And Texas hitters couldn't touch him at all. Detroit's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 35 career shutouts in 323 games started. 'I'll have to give a lot of credit to my catcher. He put all the right fingers down today.' Bearnarth (14-6) struck out 2 and issued 1 BB, throwing 68 of 106 pitches for strikes. The hitting star for Detroit was third baseman Jim Woods, he got 1 hit in 3 AB, homering once, with 3 RBI. The final score of the game was 7-0.
Friday 7/15/1975: California's Cardenal out for 4-5 weeks
CALIFORNIA - California's leftfielder Jose Cardenal will miss about 4-5 weeks after he hurt himself badly in the 7th inning of the game between California and Baltimore. He dove for a drive off the bat of Rich Chiles, and immediately signaled that he's not OK after hitting the ground. After being taken to a local hospital, Cardenal was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Broken Ulna. He has hit 3 bombs while batting .275 this season. His 89 hits and 35 walks add up to a .348 on-base percentage.
