Friday 7/29/1975: Rob Gardner pitches his 2nd shutout of the season
HOUSTON - Los Angeles (N)'s lefty Rob Gardner is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Houston on just 2 hits. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 14th time he has done it in his career. 'I had my stuff going. Everything I tried worked. What a day!' Gardner (14-6) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 8. Garry Maddox helped Gardner at the plate, he finished 1 for 5, and driving in 2 runs. The final score of the game was 4-0.
Thursday 7/28/1975: Tom Parsons out for 5-6 weeks
NEW YORK (N) - New York (N) is without its right-hander Tom Parsons for at least 5-6 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Wayne Garrett in a game against Philadelphia. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Strained Rotator Cuff Muscle which will require surgery. Tom has a record of 2-0 this season, with an ERA of 2.14. In 33.2 Innings he was able to strike out 14 batters.
Thursday 7/28/1975: Eddie Watt (BOS) will miss 5 weeks
BOSTON - Boston's ace Eddie Watt suffered a severe injury on Thursday and will be out for at least 5 weeks. In the 1st of the game against Chicago (A) he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Watt was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Herniated Disc Back. Opposing players hit .193 against Eddie this season. While posting an ERA of 2.05 he went 13-7 in 23 starts, fanning 144 and walking 49 hitters. He has 16 complete games and 5 shutouts. He's 2nd in the American League in ERA and 5th in wins!
Monday 7/25/1975: Philadelphia's Schmidt wins Player of the Week award
Carlos May wins his 2nd Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Carlos pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .400 with 7 HR and 13 RBI while slugging 1.240. He now has homered in 5 consecutive games as well! May has hit 25 longballs this year while batting .291. He adds 9 doubles, along with 61 runs scored. He's 9th in the American League in batting, 1st in homeruns and 2nd in RBI! The National League's best player of the week was Philadelphia's Mike Schmidt, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Mike went 11 for 28 (.393), while hitting 3 HR and collecting 9 RBI.
