The American League Player of the Week award goes to Pete Rose Sr., Detroit's starting shortstop. Rose Sr. helped his team with an average of .526 and 4 RBI in 19 at bats. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 12 games. Jack Billingham of Cincinnati wins his 2nd Player of the Week award for dominating National League's hitters the entire week. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 1.08 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well. Opposing players hit .196 against Jack this season. While posting an ERA of 2.74 he went 9-6 in 24 starts, fanning 133 and walking 41 hitters. He has 2 complete games and one shutout.
Saturday 8/13/1975: Jack Billingham blanks Pittsburgh with a 2-hitter
PITTSBURGH - Cincinnati's right-hander Jack Billingham is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Pittsburgh on just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 5th time he has done it in his career. Billingham (9-6) struck out 3 and issued 1 BB, throwing 57 of 88 pitches for strikes. 'Giving my team a chance to win is the most important thing for me. I was able to do it today.' John E. Briggs provided Cincinnati with the offense Billingham needed as he stroked 2 hits in 4 AB, and driving in 2 runs. Cincinnati scored 3 runs on 7 hits.
Friday 8/12/1975: Don Drysdale celebrates 400th win
PITTSBURGH - Cincinnati's players had every reason to congratulate Don Drysdale, who reached a milestone today, winning his 400th game! Don Drysdale threw 130 pitches in 9 innings, 86 for strikes. He allowed one earned run while striking out 1 and walking one earned run. He has enmassed 5964 K's in 5822 career innings so far, and posts a 2.36 lifetime ERA. He has won 20 games 12 times in his career, setting a career high with 29 wins in 1970. 'My firends always told me that I will do it one day. I never believed it. Good that I was wrong!' The Hall of Fame is already waiting for this great player.
Tuesday 8/9/1975: Mike Joyce dominates Montreal, throws NO-HITTER
SAN DIEGO - San Diego's right-hander Mike Joyce is a really great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff while making history, blanking Montreal on no hits. Cesar Geronimo spoiled the bid for a perfect game when he walked with 1 away in the 5th inning. Joyce (10-5) struck out 5 and walked 3, throwing 68 of 109 pitches for strikes. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Bobby Murcer helped Joyce at the plate, he finished with 2 hits in 4 AB, homering once. The final score of the game was 3-0.
Monday 8/8/1975: Lonborg and Morgan win Player of the Week award
It's the 3rd time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Boston's pitcher Jim Lonborg. Lonborg was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00. Along the way he struck out 12 in 18 innings. He pitched two shutouts! The National League Player of the Week award goes to Joe L. Morgan, Houston's starting second baseman. In 27 at bats he hit .481 with 2 HR and 10 RBI. Morgan has hit 9 homeruns this year while batting .299. He adds 22 doubles, along with 82 runs scored. He's 4th in the National League in batting!
