Jim Lonborg of Boston wins his 4th Player of the Week award for dominating American League's hitters the entire week. Jim went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.50, while fanning 10 in 18 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. It's the 5th time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to New York (N)'s pitcher Tom Seaver. Tom went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.51, while fanning 16 in 17.2 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. This season Seaver compiled an ERA of 1.82, going 17-7 in 29 starts. He fanned 183 while giving up 160 hits in 237.1 innings. He has 16 complete games and 7 shutouts. He's 2nd in the National League in ERA and 4th in wins!
Sunday 8/21/1975: New York (N)'s Hector Espino laces 2000th career hit
HOUSTON - Hector Espino got a standing ovation from 32997 fans in Houston, who witnessed his 2000th career hit. Along with his 2000 hits, Hector collected 258 homeruns and 1092 RBI in 14 seasons. 'It's hard to believe that I did it. I want to thank my family, my friends and my teammates!' With one out in the 4th inning, Hector drilled a double, causing a standing ovation from the crowd.
Friday 8/19/1975: Bill Melton out for 5 weeks
CALIFORNIA - California's leftfielder Bill Melton will miss at least 5 weeks after he got hurt seriously while running hard toward second base. He began limping and then fell down, causing a scary moment for his teammates. He had to be carried off the field. Melton was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Strained Posterior Cruciate Ligament. Melton has hit 30 homeruns this year while batting .263. He adds 22 doubles, along with 80 runs scored. He's 1st in the American League in RBIs and 2nd in homeruns!
Monday 8/15/1975: Jim Lonborg fires 1-hitter against Texas
BOSTON - Boston's right-hander Jim Lonborg is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Texas on just one hit. It's his 4th shutout this season, and the 31st time he has done it in his career. Lonborg (12-6) struck out 5 and walked 2, throwing 66 of 114 pitches for strikes. 'Winning is the most important thing. And I gave my team all the support it needed!' The hitting star for Boston was leftfielder Tony Conigliaro, he finished with 2 hits in 4 AB, blasting a homerun. Boston scored 5 runs on 10 hits.
