Saturday 10/1/1975: Boston's Lonborg earns Pitcher of the Month award
Boston's Jim Lonborg had a terrific September, and it earned him the American League Pitcher of the month award. His record of 6-0 in 7 was among the leagues best this month. In 61.1 innings of work he allowed just 40 hits while striking out 36, compiling an ERA of just 1.32. Jim fired two shutouts! Opposing players hit .201 against Jim this season. While posting an ERA of 2.32 he went 21-6 in 37 starts, fanning 203 and walking 56 hitters. He has 20 complete games and 6 shutouts. He's 3rd in the American League in ERA and 3rd in wins! San Diego's pitcher Don Sutton is the National League winner of the Pitcher of the Month award in September. He struck out 50 hitters in his 7 starts, putting together a record of 6-1 while pitching 50 innings. His ERA in September was 1.19. Don got two complete game shutouts as well! In 34 starts this year Don struck out 240 batters in 294 innings of work. His ERA is 2.11, his record 24-9. Don has pitched 3 shutouts and 20 complete games. The American League Batter of the Month award goes to Steve Garvey, Boston's starting first baseman. Steve went 37 for 105 (.352), while hitting 10 HR and collecting 29 RBI. He has hit 33 taters while batting .274 this season. His 166 hits and 41 walks add up to a .321 on-base percentage. He's 9th in the American League in RBIs and 7th in homeruns! The National League's best player of the month was San Diego's Gorman Thomas, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Thomas helped his team with an average of .356 and 24 RBI in 101 at bats. Thomas has hit for a .308 average this season. He has 62 extra base hits along with 288 total bases, resulting in a .506 slugging percentage. He's 5th in the National League in batting and 1st in RBI!
Friday 9/30/1975: Reggie Jackson nabs five hits against Milwaukee
MILWAUKEE - 'Wow, five hits in one game is something special, isn't it?' said New York (A)'s designated hitter Reggie Jackson after the 8-7 win over Milwaukee. In the 3rd inning he unloaded a solo homerun off John Strohmayer. Number 4 in the 7th inning, a shot estimated at 409 feet, cleared the wall in right-center. Number 5 in the 10th inning accounted for a double. He had singles in the 1st inning and in the 6th . Reggie did drive in 2 while scoring 2 runs on his own. He is hitting .270 this season, with 41 HR and 101 RBI.
Tuesday 9/27/1975: Joe Verbanic out for full season
TEXAS - Texas' right-hander Joe Verbanic will not pitch again this year, suffering a serious injury in the game against Cleveland on Tuesday. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Bone Chips Shoulder. His ERA of 6.15 helped him to a 3-5 record this year. He struck out 53 and walked 45 in 79 innings.
Monday 9/26/1975: Atlanta has no chance in a 2-hitter by Ray Burris
SAN FRANCISCO - San Francisco's right-hander Ray Burris will never forget this day. The 25-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 2-hitter, against Atlanta on Monday. Burris (10-21) struck out 5 and walked 4, throwing 61 of 104 pitches for strikes. 'Winning is the most important thing. And I gave my team all the support it needed!' Bake McBride helped Burris at the plate, he finished with 3 hits in 5 AB, doubling once, scoring 2 runs. San Francisco scored 7 runs on 12 hits.
Monday 9/26/1975: Garvey and Crawford win Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Steve Garvey, Boston's starting first baseman. Steve pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .538 with 5 HR and 12 RBI while slugging 1.269. Sunday 9/25/1975: Steve Garvey found the stroke, smashes three homers
BOSTON - Boston beat Baltimore 5-0, but that was not the real story of the game. Steve Garvey was, as he went deep three times. His 1st shot, off Masanori Murakami in the 1st inning, was a three-run homerun and cleared the fence in left field. His 2nd shot, a solo homerun off Masanori Murakami in the 3rd inning, cleared the fence in right-center. In the 8th inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Ken Kravec. Overall he stroked 3 hits in 4 AB, with three runs scored and driving in 5 runs. On 6/25/1975, Cliff Johnson was the last player to hit 3 dingers in a single game.
Saturday 9/24/1975: Luis Tiant turns in great performance against New York (N)
NEW YORK (N) - Los Angeles (N)'s right-hander Luis Tiant is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. New York (N) found out the hard way, getting just one hit. Tiant 4th shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 46th shutouts in his career. 'I really like to play baseball, and I love the way I was able to play it today.' Tiant (19-12) struck out 6 and walked 2, throwing 62 of 101 pitches for strikes. Sixto Lezcano helped Tiant at the plate, he finished with 1 hit in 3 AB. Los Angeles (N) improved its record to 96-58, scoring 2 runs on 6 hits.
Friday 9/23/1975: Cleveland's Dobson out for 6 weeks
CLEVELAND - Cleveland's right-hander Chuck Dobson suffered a severe injury on Friday and will be out for at least 6 weeks. In the 2nd of the game against Detroit he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Dobson was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Ruptured Tricep Tendon. In 37 starts this year Chuck struck out 81 batters in 279.1 innings of work. His ERA is 4.51, his record 12-16. Chuck has pitched 3 shutouts and 10 complete games.
