Monday 4/25/1976: Johnson and Thomas win Player of the Week award
Cliff Johnson from Boston wins his 2nd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. He hit .522 with 10 RBI and slugged 1.130 in 23 at bats. He has hit 4 homeruns while batting .394 this season. His 28 hits and 4 walks add up to a .442 on-base percentage. He's 4th in the American League in batting! San Diego's centerfielder Gorman Thomas had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. He hit .611 with 8 RBI and slugged 1.167 in 18 at bats.
Friday 4/22/1976: Chicago (A)'s Osugi severely injured
CHICAGO (A) - Chicago (A)'s Katsuo Osugi suffered a serious injury Friday in a game against New York (A). Osugi fell down while running the bases and couldn't get up without help. He will miss probably 5 weeks. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Strained Back Muscle. Osugi has hit 3 taters this year while batting .236. He adds 4 doubles, along with 5 runs scored.
Wednesday 4/20/1976: Fergie Jenkins dominates Houston, gives up just one hit
HOUSTON - Houston's offense is struggling, and Chicago (N)'s Fergie Jenkins didn't help them. The right-hander fired his 1st shutout of the season, a 1-hitter. 'Winning is the most important thing. And I gave my team all the support it needed!' Jenkins (1-2) struck out an astounding 13 and walked none, throwing 94 of 136 pitches for strikes. Ron Brand helped Jenkins at the plate, he collected 3 hits in 4 trips to the plate. The final score of the game was 7-0.
Tuesday 4/19/1976: Marcelino Lopez pitches his 1st shutout of the season
LOS ANGELES (N) - It was a great day for Los Angeles (N)'s southpaw Marcelino Lopez. The 32-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 1-hitter, against St. Louis on Tuesday. Lopez (2-2) struck out 6 and walked 2, throwing 60 of 94 pitches for strikes. 'Pitching a great game is always a good thing. And it doesn't get much better than today.' Los Angeles (N)'s second baseman Dave Concepcion finished 1 for 3, stroking a double. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Lopez. Los Angeles (N) scored 1 run on 2 hits.
