SAN FRANCISCO - San Francisco is without its right-hander Mike Krukow for at least 6 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Hideji Kato in a game against Los Angeles (N). His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Pulled Tricep Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. His ERA of 4.13 helped him to a 1-4 record this year. He struck out 29 and walked 25 in 56.2 innings.
Monday 5/2/1976: Beck and Howard win Player of the Week award
The American League's best player of the week was Boston's Rich Beck, who wins the award for the 7th time in his career. Rich went 2-0 with an ERA of 1.13, while fanning 10 in 16 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. Montreal's pitcher Bruce Howard had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Howard was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00. Along the way he struck out 18 in 18 innings. He pitched two shutouts! His ERA of 3.88 helped him to a 2-4 record this year. He struck out 35 and walked 32 in 46.1 innings. Bruce has pitched 2 shutouts and 4 complete games.
Sunday 5/1/1976: Detroit's Gross out for 6 weeks
DETROIT - Detroit's season took a blow when Wayne Gross suffered a serious injury in the game against Oakland. He hurt his arm throwing a strike to first base. Gross will probaby miss 6 weeks. Detroit wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Gross had suffered a Spasms Back. Gross has hit 4 longballs this year while batting .295. He adds one double, along with 22 runs scored.
Sunday 5/1/1976: Bearnarth and Perry receive Pitcher of the Month award
It's the 5th time that the American League Pitcher of the Month award goes to Detroit's pitcher Larry Bearnarth. He went 5-1 in April and finished the month with an ERA of 2.25. He struck out 18 in 52 innings. Larry fired two shutouts! New York (N)'s pitcher Gaylord Perry is the National League winner of the Pitcher of the Month award in April. He had an ERA of just 1.11 in 40.2 innings of work in which he struck out 26 hitters. His record in April is 4-1. Gaylord pitched a shutout as well.
Sunday 5/1/1976: Batter of the Month award winners announced
It's the 1st time that the American League Batter of the Month award goes to Baltimore's second baseman Toby Harrah. He hit .353 with 24 RBI and slugged .755 in 102 at bats. Gorman Thomas of San Diego wins his 2nd Batter of the Month award for putting up the best numbers in the National League. He hit .370 with 20 RBI and slugged .630 in 100 at bats.
Saturday 4/30/1976: Bruce Howard fires 1-hitter against Houston
MONTREAL - Good things can happen when you throw strikes. And Bruce Howard did so today, in a 1-hit shutout against Houston. Howard (2-4) struck out 6 and issued 3 BB, throwing 67 of 99 pitches for strikes. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Cesar Geronimo helped Howard at the plate, he finished 1 for 3, hitting a homerun. The final score of the game was 1-0.
Saturday 4/30/1976: Mickey Lolich dominates Chicago (A), gives up just one hit
CALIFORNIA - Great days are rare. But not for California's left-hander Mickey Lolich. Chicago (A) found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just one hit. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 27th time he has done it in his career. Lolich (3-3) fanned 7 and walked 6, throwing 153 pitches. 'I didn't feel that I had good stuff while warming up. But it got better the more I threw the ball. I guess I was lucky.' California's centerfielder George Foster finished with 1 hit in 3 AB, hitting a homerun, and collecting 3 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Lolich. California improved its record to 13-13, scoring 6 runs on 7 hits.
Friday 4/29/1976: Oakland's Pole out for 6 weeks
OAKLAND - Oakland is without its right-hander Dick Pole for at least 6 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Reggie Jackson in a game against New York (A). His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Torn Tricep Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. His ERA of 2.35 helped him to a 2-0 record this year. He struck out 16 and walked 11 in 30.2 innings.
Thursday 4/28/1976: Joe Rudi (PIT) will miss full season
PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh's leftfielder Joe Rudi will miss the rest of the season. He injured himself running the bases in the game between Pittsburgh and Los Angeles (N). The injury didn't seem to be serious the moment it happened. But suddenly Rudi collapsed in pain and had to be carried off the field. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Torn Posterior Cruciate Ligament. Rudi has hit for a .283 average this season. He has 14 extra base hits along with 52 total bases, resulting in a .565 slugging percentage. He's 1st in the National League in RBIs and 6th in homeruns!
Thursday 4/28/1976: Bill Gogolewski out for 6 weeks
KANSAS CITY - Kansas City is without its right-hander Bill Gogolewski for at least 6 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Gil Flores in a game against Cleveland. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Spasms Back was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. This season Gogolewski compiled an ERA of 14.21, going 0-0 in 0 starts. He fanned 3 while giving up 12 hits in 6.1 innings.
Wednesday 4/27/1976: Jim Bethke NO-HITS San Diego
SAN DIEGO - Jim Bethke had some fun again. REAL fun. San Diego hitters did not. Philadelphia's right-hander fired a no-hitter in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 9 career shutouts in 135 games started. Gorman Thomas spoiled the bid for a perfect game when he walked with no outs in the 5th inning. Bethke (2-3) fanned 2 and walked 2, throwing 98 pitches. 'I was able to keep´em off balance. That certainly helped. What a day!' Philadelphia's first baseman Ron Fairly went 2 for 3, blasting a homerun, and driving in 3 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Bethke. The final score of the game was 4-0.
