Friday 7/22/1976: Tom Seaver quiets Pittsburgh bats with shutout
NEW YORK (N) - New York (N)'s right-hander Tom Seaver is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Pittsburgh on just one hit. It's his 6th shutout this season, and the 39th time he has done it in his career. 'I really like to play baseball, and I love the way I was able to play it today.' Seaver (13-7) was overpowering, fanning 11 while walking 1, throwing 108 pitches. The hitting star for New York (N) was second baseman Frank Coggins, he went 4 for 5, blasting a homerun, with three runs scored and driving in 3 runs. New York (N) improved its record to 49-46, scoring 16 runs on 16 hits.
Thursday 7/21/1976: Houston's Watson out for 4-5 weeks
HOUSTON - Houston's Bob Watson suffered a serious injury Thursday in a game against New York (N). Watson fell down while running the bases and couldn't get up without help. He will miss probably 4-5 weeks. Watson was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Inflamed Anterior Cruciate Ligament. His season numbers are: .262 AVG, 73 hits, 13 doubles, one triple and 9 taters, along with 45 RBI and 34 runs scored.
Thursday 7/21/1976: Lew Krausse Jr. blanks Milwaukee with a 1-hitter
TEXAS - Lew Krausse Jr. had some fun again. Milwaukee hitters did not. Texas' right-hander gave up just one hit in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 19 career shutouts in 342 games started. 'I didn't feel that I had good stuff while warming up. But it got better the more I threw the ball. I guess I was lucky.' Krausse Jr. (7-8) struck out 4 and walked 3, throwing 57 of 98 pitches for strikes. Texas' catcher Ellie Rodriguez stroked 1 hit in 3 AB, homering once, and driving in 2 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Krausse Jr.. Texas scored 2 runs on 6 hits.
Wednesday 7/20/1976: Geoff Zahn turns in great performance against Texas
TEXAS - Great days are rare. But not for Milwaukee's southpaw Geoff Zahn. Texas found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 8th time he has done it in his career. Zahn (8-4) struck out 3 and walked 2, throwing 66 of 115 pitches for strikes. 'Well, the ball went where I wanted it. I was able to hit the corners with all of my pitches.' Milwaukee's third baseman Buddy Bell stroked 1 hit in 2 AB, homering once, and collecting 4 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Zahn. Milwaukee improved its record to 53-40, scoring 13 runs on 11 hits.
Monday 7/18/1976: Chicago (N)'s Santo wins Player of the Week award
It's the 3rd time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Baltimore's first baseman Carlos May. Carlos was on fire, hitting .545 with 3 HR and 10 RBI. Carlos has gone 77 for 300 (.257) this season, hitting 12 homeruns and driving in 46 runs. He has scored 50 runs on his own. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to Chicago (N)'s Ron Santo this time, as the third baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. In 25 at bats he hit .440 with 3 HR and 13 RBI.
Saturday 7/16/1976: Dick Allen collects 2000th hit against Cincinnati
HOUSTON - Houston's Dick Allen showed a smile on his face after he got his 2000th career hit against Cincinnati on Saturday. His hit in the 1st inning was a single off Rick Reuschel. Along with his 2000 hits, Dick collected 277 homeruns and 1098 RBI in 12 seasons. 'I guess I'll celebrate a bit today. But the most important thing is winning, and my whole career I gave everything I could to help my team.'
Saturday 7/16/1976: St. Louis' Strahler out for 5 weeks
ST. LOUIS - When it rains, it pours. St. Louis' right-hander Mike Strahler will not pitch for at least 5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against San Francisco where he left the field in the 1st inning. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Ruptured Elbow Ligament. Surgery will be performed next week. His ERA of 5.97 helped him to a 5-4 record this year. He struck out 64 and walked 67 in 95 innings.
