Saturday 8/6/1976: Pittsburgh's Bud Bulling hits for the cycle
PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh's third baseman Bud Bulling once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up Montreal's pitching staff with a 4 hit performance on Saturday. In the 3rd inning he unloaded a three-run homerun off Bruce Howard. A single in the 5th off Von McDaniel accounted for his 2nd hit. A double off Rick Austin in the 7th inning accounted for his 3rd hit. A pitch from Rick Austin in the 8th inning left his bat for a two-run triple. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Bud scored one run, and he collected 5 RBI as well! He now has a total of 40 hits this season, accounting for a .288 batting average. He's now the 46th player in league history to hit for the cycle! Bill Madlock was the last player to hit for the cycle, doing it 9/10/1975.
Friday 8/5/1976: Chicago (N)'s Cooper severely injured
CHICAGO (N) - Chicago (N)'s season has taken a hit after one of their best players, first baseman Cecil Cooper, injured himself while rounding a base. He is likely to miss 6 weeks. After being taken to a local hospital, Cooper was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Torn Calf Muscle. He has hit 14 longballs while batting .244 this season. His 98 hits and 26 walks add up to a .288 on-base percentage.
Tuesday 8/2/1976: St. Louis' Lou Brock laces 2000th career hit
MONTREAL - St. Louis' players had every reason to congratulate Lou Brock, who reached a milestone today, collecting his 2000th career hit! His hit in the 5th inning was a single off Von McDaniel. In 12 years of big league action so far, Lou has compiled a batting average of .292, along with 61 homeruns and 590 RBI. 'I still remember my first hit. But the one today is something special. I'll definitely keep that ball!'

DETROIT - When it rains, it pours. Detroit's right-hander Jack Jenkins will not pitch for at least 5-6 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Cleveland where he left the field in the 5th inning. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Pulled Rotator Cuff Muscle. Opposing players hit .248 against Jack this season. While posting an ERA of 4.48 he went 6-8 in 20 starts, fanning 88 and walking 40 hitters.

Cleveland's pitcher Mike Flanagan had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Mike went 2-0 with an ERA of 2.00, while fanning 8 in 18 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. It's the 2nd time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to San Diego's pitcher Chris Zachary. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 0.50 while going 2-0. Winner of this months American League Pitcher of the Month award is Texas' Fred Newman. He went 3-1 in July and finished the month with an ERA of 1.10. He struck out 14 in 41 innings. In 21 starts this year Fred struck out 50 batters in 163.2 innings of work. His ERA is 2.75, his record 11-6. He has 6 complete games and one shutout. Winner of this months National League Pitcher of the Month award is New York (N)'s Tom Seaver. He had an ERA of just 0.88 in 51.1 innings of work in which he struck out 51 hitters. His record in July is 4-1. Tom fired THREE shutouts! This season Seaver compiled an ERA of 1.64, going 14-7 in 24 starts. He fanned 186 while giving up 139 hits in 202.2 innings. Tom has pitched 7 shutouts and 15 complete games. He's 1st in the National League in ERA and 5th in wins!

Chicago (A)'s first baseman Katsuo Osugi had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Batter of the Month. He had an on base percentage of .393 and hit .312, while driving in 32 runs. Katsuo is hitting .272 this year, with 77 hits in 283 at bats. He has driven in 69 runs, slugging .537. Eddie Murray of San Francisco wins his 1st Batter of the Month award for putting up the best numbers in the National League. Eddie went 37 for 101 (.366), while hitting 8 HR and collecting 23 RBI. His season features a batting average of .308 (118 hits in 383 AB), 24 doubles, one triple and 18 homeruns. Murray collected 61 RBI and 66 runs as well. He's 5th in the National League in batting!
