Monday 8/15/1976: California's Horton wins Player of the Week award
Tony Horton from California wins his 2nd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. Horton helped his team with an average of .524 and 10 RBI in 21 at bats. It's the 1st time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to New York (N)'s third baseman Hector Espino. He hit .417 with 6 RBI and slugged .792 in 24 at bats. He now has homered in 3 consecutive games as well! Espino has hit 18 taters this year while batting .281. He adds 26 doubles, along with 55 runs scored.
Tuesday 8/9/1976: Skip Guinn pitches his 1st shutout of the season
CLEVELAND - New York (A)'s lefty Skip Guinn will never forget this day. The 31-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 1-hitter, against Cleveland on Tuesday. Guinn (3-14) struck out 8 and walked 3, throwing 62 of 110 pitches for strikes. 'Well, the ball went where I wanted it. I was able to hit the corners with all of my pitches.' Reggie Jackson helped Guinn at the plate, he collected 3 hits in 4 trips to the plate, blasting a homerun, and driving in 2 runs. New York (A) improved its record to 45-67, scoring 4 runs on 8 hits.
Monday 8/8/1976: Beck and Bulling win Player of the Week award
The American League's best player of the week was Boston's Rich Beck, who wins the award for the 8th time in his career. Rich went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.53, while fanning 10 in 17 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. In 28 starts this year Rich struck out 130 batters in 220.2 innings of work. His ERA is 2.98, his record 19-5. Rich has pitched 7 shutouts and 9 complete games. He's 8th in the American League in ERA and 1st in wins! It's the 1st time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Pittsburgh's catcher Bud Bulling. Bulling helped his team with an average of .444 and 8 RBI in 27 at bats. While compiling an on base percentage of .313, Bud hit .282 and slugged .423. He has collected 16 runs batted in this year.
