Monday 10/31/1976: Chicago (A)'s Messersmith earns Cy Young Award
Andy Messersmith will never forget this year. His dominating season convinced the American League to name Chicago (A)'s right-hander the Cy Young Award winner of 1976. His ERA of 2.47 helped him to a 25-7 record this year. He struck out 189 and walked 171 in 302.1 innings. Andy has pitched 3 shutouts and 9 complete games. He's 2nd in the American League in ERA and 3rd in wins! Tom Seaver will never forget this year. His dominating season convinced the National League to name New York (N)'s right-hander the Cy Young Award winner of 1976. Tom has a record of 23-9 this season, with an ERA of 1.81. In 322.2 Innings he was able to strike out 278 batters. He has 23 complete games and 8 shutouts. He's 1st in the National League in ERA and 6th in wins! California's designated hitter Bill Melton had a fabulous season, no doubt about it. The American League shared this opinion and names the 31 year old the Most Valuable Player Award winner! His season numbers are: .278 AVG, 157 hits, 27 doubles, 8 triples and 48 taters, along with 132 RBI and 106 runs scored. He's 2nd in the American League in RBIs and 2nd in homeruns! The National League Most Valuable Player Award goes to Bobby Murcer this year. He had an extraordinary season as well! His season numbers are: .327 AVG, 192 hits, 34 doubles, 8 triples and 26 taters, along with 103 RBI and 122 runs scored. He's 1st in the National League in batting and 4th in RBI! Murcer wins the award for the 2nd time in his 10-year career.

Detroit's Wayne Gross was almost in tears when he heard the news. The 24 year old second baseman was named the Rookie of the Year Award winner in the American League today. What a way to begin a career! Gross has hit for a .306 average this season. He has 31 extra base hits along with 201 total bases, resulting in a .477 slugging percentage. Getting an award is a nice way to start a career. San Francisco's Eddie Murray smiled as he was named the National League Rookie of the Year Award winner. This year Murray drove in 88 and scored 92 runs while batting .301 with 22 bombs. He's 5th in the National League in batting!
