Monday 4/18/1977: San Francisco's Hebner wins Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to George Brett, Kansas City's starting third baseman. He hit .464 with 17 RBI and slugged .964 in 28 at bats. The National League's best player of the week was San Francisco's Richie Hebner, who wins the award for the 2nd time in his career. In 21 at bats he hit .619 with 5 HR and 7 RBI. He now has homered in 3 consecutive games as well!
Saturday 4/16/1977: Huge blow for Kansas City's Renko, career over
KANSAS CITY - It was one of baseball saddest days. Kansas City's right-hander Steve Renko fell victim to a career ending injury in a game against New York (A) on Saturday. He complained about pain after throwing a pitch to Eric Soderholm, then suddenly collapsed. Renko was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Torn Tricep Muscle. Steve has a record of 2-0 this season, with an ERA of 4.40. In 14.1 Innings he was able to strike out 9 batters. His career featured a record of 72-96 with an ERA of 4.50. Baseball will certainly miss this great player.
Thursday 4/14/1977: Jim Kaat out for 4-5 weeks
ST. LOUIS - When it rains, it pours. St. Louis' left-hander Jim Kaat will not pitch for at least 4-5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against San Francisco where he left the field in the 5th inning. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Strained Tricep Muscle. In 3 starts this year Jim struck out 11 batters in 17.1 innings of work. His ERA is 6.75, his record 0-1.
Monday 4/11/1977: Cardenal (CAL) and Brabender (NYM) win P.O.W. award
The American League's best player of the week was California's Jose Cardenal, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Jose went 15 for 32 (.469), while hitting 3 HR and collecting 7 RBI. This year Cardenal drove in 7 and scored 9 runs while batting .417 with 3 taters. He's 5th in the American League in batting! Gene Brabender of New York (N) wins his 6th Player of the Week award for dominating National League's hitters the entire week. Brabender was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 1.50. Along the way he struck out 14 in 18 innings. He hurled a shutout as well.
Sunday 4/10/1977: Chico Salmon collects 2000th hit against Montreal
MONTREAL - New York (N)'s leftfielder Chico Salmon already had some highlights in his career, and today he added another one, getting his 2000th career hit. Along with his 2000 hits, Chico collected 138 homeruns and 792 RBI in 12 seasons. 'You dream about that as a kid, but when you reach such a milestone it's hard to believe. Fantastic.' With no outs in the 6th inning, Chico drilled a single, causing a standing ovation from the crowd.
Sunday 4/10/1977: Hector Espino (BOS) will miss full season
BOSTON - Boston's leftfielder Hector Espino will miss the rest of the season. He injured himself running the bases in the game between Boston and Cleveland. The injury didn't seem to be serious the moment it happened. But suddenly Espino collapsed in pain and had to be carried off the field. After being taken to a local hospital, Espino was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Torn Back Muscle.
Monday 4/4/1977: Fritz Peterson pitches his 1st shutout of the season
TORONTO - Fritz Peterson had his best stuff going, and Chicago (A) hitters were chanceless. Toronto's southpaw fired a 1-hitter, his 1st shutout of the season. Peterson (1-0) struck out 3 and issued 1 BB, throwing 62 of 105 pitches for strikes. 'That was one of the best games of my career. I had my stuff working very well today.' Graig Nettles helped Peterson at the plate, he stroked 5 hits in 5 AB, blasting a homerun, stroking a double, scoring 2 runs and driving in 2 runs. Toronto scored 10 runs on 11 hits.
