Monday 4/25/1977: Messersmith (CHA) and Herrmann (LAN) win P.O.W. award
It's the 3rd time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Chicago (A)'s pitcher Andy Messersmith. Andy went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00, while fanning 3 in 18 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. Ed Herrmann wins his 1st Player of the Week award. National League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Ed went 13 for 21 (.619), while hitting 2 HR and collecting 5 RBI. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 7 game hitting streak right now. Ed is hitting .420 this year, with 29 hits in 69 at bats. He has driven in 17 runs, slugging .739. He's 1st in the National League in batting, 6th in homeruns and 5th in RBI!
Saturday 4/23/1977: Doug Rau turns in great performance against Houston
PHILADELPHIA - Good things can happen when you throw strikes. And Doug Rau did so today, in a 2-hit shutout against Houston. Rau (2-1) fanned 1 and walked 3, throwing 107 pitches. 'I had a good grip on the ball today and I was able to put it where I wanted. That kept them out of balance.' Ron Cey helped Rau at the plate, he finished with 2 hits in 5 AB, blasting a homerun, scoring twice and driving in 5 runs. The final score of the game was 12-0.
Tuesday 4/19/1977: New York (A)'s Chance severely injured
NEW YORK (A) - When it rains, it pours. New York (A)'s right-hander Dean Chance will not pitch for at least 6 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Kansas City where he left the field in the 6th inning. After being taken to a local hospital, Chance was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Pulled Bicep Muscle. This season Chance compiled an ERA of 3.86, going 2-0 in 4 starts. He fanned 13 while giving up 31 hits in 28 innings.
