Monday 5/2/1977: Ed Herrmann (LAN) will miss 4 weeks
LOS ANGELES (N) - Los Angeles (N)'s Ed Herrmann suffered a serious injury Monday in a game against Atlanta. Herrmann fell down while running the bases and couldn't get up without help. He will miss probably 4 weeks. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Strained Posterior Cruciate Ligament. While compiling an on base percentage of .454, Ed hit .424 and slugged .717. He has collected 20 runs batted in this year. He's 1st in the National League in batting, 6th in homeruns and 7th in RBI!
Monday 5/2/1977: San Diego's Madlock wins Player of the Week award
California's centerfielder George Foster had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. George went 10 for 27 (.370), while hitting 5 HR and collecting 14 RBI. While compiling an on base percentage of .313, George hit .233 and slugged .515. He has collected 24 runs batted in this year. Bill Madlock wins his 1st Player of the Week award. National League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. He had an on base percentage of .500 and hit .500, while driving in 11 runs.
Sunday 5/1/1977: Larvell Blanks out for 4-5 weeks
CALIFORNIA - California's season took a blow when Larvell Blanks suffered a serious injury in the game against Cleveland. He hurt his arm throwing a strike to first base. Blanks will probaby miss 4-5 weeks. Torn Bicep Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. Blanks has hit for a .286 average this season. He has 6 extra base hits along with 43 total bases, resulting in a .384 slugging percentage.
Sunday 5/1/1977: Pitcher of the Month award winners announced
Detroit's Roger Nelson had a terrific April, and it earned him the American League Pitcher of the month award. His ERA of just 1.45 helped him to a 6-0 record in April. He worked 49.2 innings, striking out 28 hitters while walking 17. Winner of this months National League Pitcher of the Month award is Pittsburgh's Clay Kirby. He had an ERA of just 2.44 in 59 innings of work in which he struck out 42 hitters. His record in April is 6-0.
Sunday 5/1/1977: New York (A)'s Jackson earns Batter of the Month award
It's the 2nd time that the American League Batter of the Month award goes to New York (A)'s rightfielder Reggie Jackson. Jackson helped his team with an average of .333 and 27 RBI in 96 at bats. The Batter of the Month award in the National League goes to San Francisco's Richie Hebner this time, as the leftfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Richie was on fire, hitting .381 with 9 homeruns and 23 RBI.
Saturday 4/30/1977: Boston's Johnson severely injured
BOSTON - Boston's first baseman Cliff Johnson suffered a serious injury when he was struck by a pitch from Milwaukee's John Strohmayer. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. Johnson will probaby miss 4-5 weeks. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Broken Hand which will require surgery. Johnson has walked 14 times this year and posts a .327 OBP. While batting .215, 20 for 93, he has driven in 15 runs.
Friday 4/29/1977: Seattle's Lee severely injured
SEATTLE - Seattle's left-hander Bill F. Lee will not pitch again this year, suffering a serious injury in the game against Toronto on Friday. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Torn Bicep Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. Bill F. has a record of 2-2 this season, with an ERA of 5.45. In 34.2 Innings he was able to strike out 14 batters.
Thursday 4/28/1977: Ron Cook pitches his 1st shutout of the season
SEATTLE - All you need to win is a dominating pitching performance. And Toronto's Ron Cook did so today, in a 2-hit shutout against Seattle. Cook (1-1) fanned 4 and walked 4, throwing 127 pitches. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Toronto's Toronto improved its record to 10-15, scoring 2 runs on 6 hits.
Wednesday 4/27/1977: Darold Knowles out for 5 weeks
MINNESOTA - Minnesota is without its lefty Darold Knowles for at least 5 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Jorge Orta in a game against New York (A). His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Minnesota wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Knowles had suffered a Herniated Disc Back. Darold has a record of 0-3 this season, with an ERA of 6.91. In 27.1 Innings he was able to strike out 8 batters.
Monday 4/25/1977: Tom Ragland clubs three rockets
SEATTLE - Hitting a homerun is fine, but hitting three of them in one game is something special. Kansas City's second baseman Tom Ragland accomplished that feat in a 11-7 win over Seattle. Number 1 in the 2nd inning, a shot estimated at 397 feet, cleared the wall in left-center. It tied the ballgame at 4. His 2nd shot, off Dave Morehead in the 6th inning, was a two-run homerun and cleared the fence in center field. In the 8th inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Dave Morehead. Overall he collected 4 hits in 4 trips to the plate, scoring three times and collecting 4 RBI.
