Wednesday 6/8/1977: Don Hood shuts out Houston on 2 hits
HOUSTON - Montreal's left-hander Don Hood is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Houston found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Hood 1st shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 7th shutouts in his career. Hood (8-4) struck out 6 and issued 2 BB, throwing 71 of 112 pitches for strikes. 'I felt early that I was on top of my game. Fortunately I was able to keep that feeling the entire game.' Bruce Miller provided Montreal with the offense Hood needed as he got 2 hits in 4 AB. Montreal improved its record to 28-34, scoring 4 runs on 6 hits.
Monday 6/6/1977: Bando (OAK) and Murcer (SDG) win P.O.W. award
It's the 3rd time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Oakland's first baseman Sal Bando. He hit .526 with 8 RBI and slugged 1.316 in 19 at bats. Bobby Murcer from San Diego wins his 3rd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. Bobby went 12 for 20 (.600), while hitting 2 HR and collecting 7 RBI.
Saturday 6/4/1977: Roger Nelson pitches his 2nd shutout of the season
DETROIT - Detroit's right-hander Roger Nelson is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Minnesota found out the hard way, getting just one hit. Nelson 2nd shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 21st shutouts in his career. Nelson (11-1) fanned 4 and walked 2, throwing 115 pitches. 'I had my stuff going. Everything I tried worked. What a day!' Detroit's third baseman Wayne Gross got 2 hits in 2 AB, hitting two dingers, scoring two runs with 2 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Nelson. The final score of the game was 3-0.
Saturday 6/4/1977: Boston's Tom Haller laces 2000th career hit
CLEVELAND - Boston's Tom Haller showed a smile on his face after he got his 2000th career hit against Cleveland on Saturday. His best year so far was 1964 where he hit .292 with 32 homeruns and 95 RBI. 'I still remember my first hit. But the one today is something special. I'll definitely keep that ball!' With no outs in the 9th inning, Tom drilled a grand slam, causing a standing ovation from the crowd.
Friday 6/3/1977: Dave Leonhard (BOS) will miss 4-5 weeks
BOSTON - When it rains, it pours. Boston's right-hander Dave Leonhard will not pitch for at least 4-5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Cleveland where he left the field in the 8th inning. After being taken to a local hospital, Leonhard was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Pulled Rotator Cuff Muscle. Opposing players hit .267 against Dave this season. While posting an ERA of 3.55 he went 0-2 in 0 starts, fanning 6 and walking 4 hitters.
