Friday 7/1/1977: Reynolds and Corkins receive Pitcher of the Month award
Boston's Bob Reynolds had a terrific June, and it earned him the American League Pitcher of the month award. He went 4-1 in June and finished the month with an ERA of 0.60. He struck out 21 in 45 innings. Bob pitched THREE complete game shutouts! Opposing players hit .171 against Bob this season. While posting an ERA of 1.49 he went 12-4 in 16 starts, fanning 73 and walking 39 hitters. He has 13 complete games and 3 shutouts. He's 1st in the American League in ERA and 3rd in wins! Pittsburgh's pitcher Mike Corkins is the National League winner of the Pitcher of the Month award in June. His record of 5-2 in 7 was among the leagues best this month. In 62 innings of work he allowed just 44 hits while striking out 53, compiling an ERA of just 1.74. Mike fired two shutouts! In 21 starts this year Mike struck out 136 batters in 177 innings of work. Friday 7/1/1977: Baltimore's Matthews Sr. earns Batter of the Month award
It's the 2nd time that the American League Batter of the Month award goes to Baltimore's leftfielder Gary Matthews Sr.. He hit .413 with 24 RBI and slugged .815 in 92 at bats. Gary is hitting .320 this year, with 91 hits in 284 at bats. He has driven in 75 runs, slugging .623. He's 9th in the American League in batting, 7th in homeruns and 1st in RBI! Chicago (N)'s first baseman Cecil Cooper had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Batter of the Month. He hit .404 with 18 RBI and slugged .606 in 94 at bats. This year Cooper drove in 48 and scored 55 runs while batting .360 with 6 homeruns. He's 1st in the National League in batting!
Monday 6/27/1977: Foster (CAL) and Cooper (CHN) win P.O.W. award
The American League's best player of the week was California's George Foster, who wins the award for the 4th time in his career. In 24 at bats he hit .417 with 7 HR and 13 RBI. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to Chicago (N)'s Cecil Cooper this time, as the first baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Cecil pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .476 with 2 HR and 3 RBI while slugging .762. His season numbers are: .368 AVG, 106 hits, 17 doubles, 4 triples and 6 taters, along with 47 RBI and 54 runs scored. He's 1st in the National League in batting!
Sunday 6/26/1977: Lew Krausse Jr. blanks Minnesota with a 2-hitter
TEXAS - Lew Krausse Jr. had some fun again. Minnesota hitters did not. Texas' right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 23 career shutouts in 368 games started. Krausse Jr. (9-4) struck out 8 and walked 2, throwing 75 of 118 pitches for strikes. 'Well, the ball went where I wanted it. I was able to hit the corners with all of my pitches.' Texas' catcher Ellie Rodriguez finished with 3 hits in 4 AB, hitting a double. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Krausse Jr.. Texas scored 3 runs on 8 hits.
Saturday 6/25/1977: George Foster on fire, crushes three
CALIFORNIA - Hitting homeruns is one of the most difficult things in sports. To hit three of them in one game is almost sensational. California's centerfielder George Foster accomplished that feat in a 10-8 win over Toronto. Number 1 in the 3rd inning, a shot estimated at 374 feet, cleared the wall in left field. The game was tied, 3-3, after the blast. His 2nd shot, a solo homerun off Charlie Hough in the 4th inning, cleared the fence in left-center. His 3rd blast, a three-run homerun off Max Leon in the 5th inning, landed an estimated 389 feet from home plate. Overall he stroked 3 hits in 4 AB, scoring three times with 5 RBI. California scored 10 runs on 14 hits.
Tuesday 6/21/1977: Huge blow for Texas' Simmons, career over
TEXAS - Texas' Ted Simmons suffered a serious injury Tuesday in a game against Minnesota. Simmons fell down while running the bases and couldn't get up without help. He will miss probably entire career. Texas wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Simmons had suffered a Ruptured Achilles Tendon. Ted is hitting .276 this year, with 74 hits in 268 at bats. He has driven in 34 runs, slugging .429.
Monday 6/20/1977: Rudi (BAL) and Jaster (SDG) win P.O.W. award
It's the 1st time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Baltimore's rightfielder Joe Rudi. Rudi helped his team with an average of .417 and 12 RBI in 24 at bats. The National League's best player of the week was San Diego's Larry Jaster, who wins the award for the 2nd time in his career. Jaster was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 1.06. Along the way he struck out 19 in 17 innings. He hurled a shutout as well.
Thursday 6/16/1977: Bill Gogolewski shuts out Texas on one hit
TEXAS - Texas' hitters looked uncomfortable, and Kansas City's Bill Gogolewski didn't help them. The right-hander fired his 1st shutout of the season, a 1-hitter. 'Winning is the most important thing. And I gave my team all the support it needed!' Gogolewski (5-5) fanned 1 and walked 3, throwing 111 pitches. George Brett helped Gogolewski at the plate, he collected 4 hits in 5 trips to the plate, hitting a homerun, doubling once, scoring 2 runs. The final score of the game was 8-0.
