Friday 7/8/1977: Detroit's Pete Rose Sr. pounds five hits
TEXAS - Detroit's shortstop Pete Rose Sr. once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up Texas' pitching staff with a 5 hit performance on Friday. In the 1st inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Cecil Upshaw. A pitch from Sparky Lyle in the 11th inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 392 feet from home plate in right field. He collected singles in the 3rd inning , in the 5th and in the 8th inning (one RBI). Pete scored 2 runs, and he collected 3 RBI as well! This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 99 hits in 299 at bats, resulting in a .331 batting average. Detroit improved its record to 53-33, scoring 6 runs on 13 hits.
Wednesday 7/6/1977: Huge blow for Philadelphia's Norris, career over
PHILADELPHIA - It was one of baseball saddest days. Philadelphia's right-hander Mike Norris fell victim to a career ending injury in a game against Atlanta on Wednesday. He complained about pain after throwing a pitch to Amos Otis, then suddenly collapsed. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Torn Tricep Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. His ERA of 5.63 helped him to a 3-5 record this year. He struck out 30 and walked 31 in 62.1 innings. His career featured a record of 3-5 with an ERA of 5.63. Baseball will certainly miss this great player.
