Tuesday 7/26/1977: Don Sutton fires NO-NO against St. Louis
SAN DIEGO - San Diego's right-hander Don Sutton is a really great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff while making history, blanking St. Louis on no hits. 'I really like to play baseball, and I love the way I was able to play it today. I still cannot believe I did it.' Sutton (11-10) was overpowering, fanning 11 while walking 4, throwing 106 pitches. Dave Winfield provided San Diego with the offense Sutton needed as he got 1 hit in 4 AB, homering once, with 3 RBI. San Diego improved its record to 60-41, scoring 7 runs on 7 hits.
Tuesday 7/26/1977: Cleveland has no chance in a 2-hitter by Jim Lonborg
CLEVELAND - Jim Lonborg had some fun again. Cleveland hitters did not. Boston's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 43 career shutouts in 417 games started. 'That was one of the best games of my career. I had my stuff working very well today.' Lonborg (10-7) struck out 6 and issued 2 BB, throwing 68 of 108 pitches for strikes. Johnny Jeter provided Boston with the offense Lonborg needed as he stroked 2 hits in 4 AB, hitting a homerun, scoring two runs with 4 RBI. The final score of the game was 13-0.
Monday 7/25/1977: Yazawa (TEX) and Morris (ATL) win P.O.W. award
Kenichi Yazawa from Texas wins his 2nd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. In 25 at bats he hit .560 with 3 HR and 9 RBI. Yazawa has walked 24 times this year and posts a .349 OBP. While batting .306, 113 for 369, he has driven in 64 runs. It's the 2nd time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Atlanta's pitcher Danny Morris. Danny went 2-0 with an ERA of 2.16, while fanning 17 in 16.2 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. Danny has a record of 6-12 this season, with an ERA of 5.17. In 153.1 Innings he was able to strike out 118 batters. Danny has pitched one shutout and 10 complete games.
