Friday 8/5/1977: Don Kirkwood shuts out Cincinnati on 2 hits
CINCINNATI - San Francisco's right-hander Don Kirkwood is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Cincinnati found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Kirkwood 1st shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 3rd shutouts in his career. Kirkwood (11-6) struck out 4 and issued 3 BB, throwing 63 of 119 pitches for strikes. 'I had my stuff going. Everything I tried worked. What a day!' Bill North helped Kirkwood at the plate, he stroked 3 hits in 4 AB, homering once, doubling once, scoring three times. San Francisco scored 3 runs on 9 hits.
Thursday 8/4/1977: Lew Krausse Jr. dominates Toronto, gives up just one hit
TEXAS - Texas' right-hander Lew Krausse Jr. is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Toronto found out the hard way, getting just one hit. Krausse Jr. 3rd shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 24th shutouts in his career. Krausse Jr. (13-6) fanned 4 and walked 1, throwing 80 pitches. 'I hit the corners with all of my pitches. That helped a lot!' Kenichi Yazawa helped Krausse Jr. at the plate, he stroked 4 hits in 5 AB. Texas scored 6 runs on 12 hits.
Monday 8/1/1977: Minnesota has no chance in a 1-hitter by Larry Anderson
CHICAGO (A) - Chicago (A)'s right-hander Larry Anderson will never forget this day. The 24-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 1-hitter, against Minnesota on Monday. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today.' Anderson (11-11) struck out 8 and issued 1 BB, throwing 63 of 96 pitches for strikes. The hitting star for Chicago (A) was rightfielder Bob Molinaro, he stroked 2 hits in 4 AB, and driving in 2 runs. Chicago (A) scored 5 runs on 9 hits.
Monday 8/1/1977: Detroit's Pete Rose Sr. gets milestone hit
DETROIT - Detroit's shortstop Pete Rose Sr. was in good mood after the game against Cleveland, and he had every reason as he made some history while collecting his 3000th career hit. His hit in the 4th inning was a single off Mark Fidrych. His best year so far was 1970 where he hit .381 with 45 homeruns and 125 RBI. 'I'm out of words. I'll probably realize it tomorrow, but for now I'm done.' It's no secret that he will one day be in the Hall of Fame!
Monday 8/1/1977: Dwyer (NYA) and Thomas (SDG) win P.O.W. award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Jim Dwyer, New York (A)'s starting leftfielder. He had an on base percentage of .520 and hit .455, while driving in 8 runs. He now has homered in 3 consecutive games as well! Dwyer has hit 32 taters this year while batting .304. He adds 15 doubles, along with 83 runs scored. He's 3rd in the American League in RBIs and 3rd in homeruns! The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to San Diego's Gorman Thomas this time, as the centerfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Gorman pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .522 with 3 HR and 6 RBI while slugging .957.
Monday 8/1/1977: Pitcher of the Month award winners announced
Bob Reynolds couldn't have pitched much better than he did in July, and the American League thought so as well, naming the right-hander Pitcher of the Month. He had an ERA of just 1.59 in 39.2 innings of work in which he struck out 19 hitters. His record in July is 3-2. Bob also fired a shutout. This season Reynolds compiled an ERA of 1.51, going 15-6 in 21 starts. He fanned 92 while giving up 120 hits in 178.2 innings. He has 17 complete games and 4 shutouts. He's 1st in the American League in ERA and 3rd in wins! Philadelphia's pitcher Jim Bibby is the National League winner of the Pitcher of the Month award in July. He had an ERA of just 1.50 in 42 innings of work in which he struck out 34 hitters. His record in July is 4-0. Jim pitched a shutout as well. Jim has a record of 11-7 this season, with an ERA of 2.66. In 169 Innings he was able to strike out 140 batters. Jim has pitched one shutout and 6 complete games.
Monday 8/1/1977: Batter of the Month award winners announced
The American League's best player of the month was Baltimore's Gary Matthews Sr., who wins the award for the 3rd time in his career. He hit .375 with 38 RBI and slugged .896 in 96 at bats. Matthews Sr. has walked 78 times this year and posts a .446 OBP. While batting .334, 127 for 380, he has driven in 113 runs. He's 3rd in the American League in batting, 5th in homeruns and 1st in RBI! The National League Batter of the Month award goes to Mike Schmidt, Philadelphia's starting third baseman. He hit .347 with 25 RBI and slugged .726 in 95 at bats. Schmidt has hit for a .239 average this season. He has 47 extra base hits along with 192 total bases, resulting in a .484 slugging percentage. He's 5th in the National League in RBIs and 3rd in homeruns!
