Jim Dwyer wins his 4th Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Dwyer helped his team with an average of .478 and 7 RBI in 23 at bats. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to Montreal's Hiromitsu Kadota this time, as the rightfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Friday 8/19/1977: Chicago (N)'s Maddox severely injured
CHICAGO (N) - Chicago (N)'s centerfielder Elliott Maddox will miss about 7-8 weeks after he hurt himself badly in the 7th inning of the game between Chicago (N) and San Diego. He dove for a drive off the bat of Rod Carew, and immediately signaled that he's not OK after hitting the ground. Fractured Hand was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. Tanana 2nd shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 3rd shutouts in his career. 'Today I just felt fine. I had a good feeling while warming up.' Tanana (9-13) struck out 5 and issued 3 BB, throwing 72 of 120 pitches for strikes. The hitting star for Chicago (A) was centerfielder Willie Montanez, he went 1 for 4, blasting a homerun, with 3 RBI. Chicago (A) scored 7 runs on 9 hits.
Monday 8/15/1977: Gil Blanco pitches his 3rd shutout of the season
SAN DIEGO - Gil Blanco had his best stuff going, and San Diego hitters had nothing to cheer about. New York (N)'s lefty pitched a 1-hitter, his 3rd shutout of the season. New York (N)'s catcher Joe Torre got 3 hits in 5 AB, blasting a homerun, with 2 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Blanco. New York (N) improved its record to 53-64, scoring 5 runs on 13 hits.
